1) Allow TheFlyingPig back w/o any strings attached.
Everyone knows this

2) ability to block users from posting in a thread you created.

3) if a thread has no new posts in a year, auto-lock it to prevent necro threads.

1: Completely disagree. I and many others would be happy if he never show his face in here again.

2: Just use the ignore feature

3: Agreed or have the thread automatically marked as a necro.

He was someones sockpuppet anyway so he's still around.

It would be nice if the ignore function would include quoted posts as well.

3: Agreed or have the thread automatically marked as a necro.

That would be a great solution to necros, just flag them next to the title. That way everyone knows they are a necro and theres no need to lock them.

If a Necro thread is revived with a post made to illustrate how times and opinions have changed, or to show history has repeated itself, it shouldn't be locked. Sometimes those old threads are a time capsule to anywhere from our childhood to early thirties. To revisit those times are good.

TL;DR, if the a Necro thread is revived with relevant information, DO NOT LOCK IT PLEASE.

That could end up with people necroing multiple threads and spamming the front page with them.

How about they get moved to a new sub forum (yes I know) called the graveyard?

Don't lock necros at all. If you don't like them, don't read them. If people bumps necros just to bump necros, deal with the person.

What's wrong with that? If we already have a thread from 2002 called "What's your favorite pie" or whatever, wouldn't it be better for new entries to be added to than rather than a new thread be created?

If there is any vB mod to bury a thread so that I never see it again, it would be appreciated. There are threads in Off Topic that can stay up at the top for months or years at a time.

How about unbanning a huge group of people who were banned during the "great purge?" Many were never given reasons for said permabans...they just were.

Mods killed off tons of members to just do it. What they didn't realize that more members=more ad revenue. Especially banning over not even trivial stuff, but the unknown.

I don't have a problem with people bumping old threads if there's a reason for it but you know that certain people are going to act like dicks and necro lots of random threads for no other reason than to annoy.

I honestly thought we would be hearing from a bunch of those folks, but from what I've seen at the Kingdom of Crap and Neffers, most seem to think it's going to be "meet the new boss, same as the old boss".

Then report it?

Those who abuse it can be infracted.

I'm sure it will. No notice of change in the forum staff has been announced.

The more things change...the more they stay the same.

ive been saying this for years
and more forums keep getting added.......

Id leave the CPU forum and the vid card forums seperage but merge Mobos, Memory, Power Supplies, Cases and prehip back into gen hardware. HTPCs and SFF can go together as well

Move the *Nix stuff into ther OS forum, you could prob move security into the Windows software forum as well as thats what most of it is

P&N and Discussion club just need to be mreged as they are the same thing at this point

Yeah, stuff like HTPC's & Audio/Video & Home Theater could be merged as well, since they're super related.

One of the nice things about ATOT is you never know what you'll find there. Except that it won't be pron and it won't be nasty politics. I like that. But now you won't find health & fitness discussion. Or car discussion. Or home & garden discussion...

What I'm wondering is if it's possible to make a "forum" in vBulletin, which you can't post to, but which shows the posts from all sub-forums? For example, look here. That forum has lots of subforums. You can't post to that forum, but you can post to any sub-forum, and the post will appear in the main forum. Edit: But, of course, that's not a vBulletin site.

If that's possible, I'd like Off Topic to be a main forum, that you can't post directly to, and have Health & Fitness, The Garage, Home & Garden, and almost everything else (edit: everything else social, that is) be sub-forums that you can post to. Obviously there should also be a catch-all for anything else - it's just that if the parent is "Off Topic" I don't know what to call the catch-all forum.

As for what not to put in this "Off Topic parent" forum, I would exclude Politics & News - they have different moderation requirements and can be nastier. Maybe Discussion Club as well, but I'm not sure. I would also exclude Love & Relationships. As users who aren't logged in can't see posts in L&R, they shouldn't see the posts listed or blank spaces for them in "Off Topic parent".

An update to my post:
  • This looks like a plausible mechanism to implement what I'm requesting in the post I linked to above. (But I really don't know since I can't see the code.)
  • This could apply to lots of other sections, to fix what [post=37007401]Dullard wants fixed[/post] without actually eliminating the subforums.

I really, really like this idea, down to the granular level of leaving P&N and L&R out of what would look like the OT of old that so many of us miss. :thumbsup:

I have mixed feelings on the sub-forums. I would like to see some added (like cooking), but I would like to see some consolidated...the Hardware and Technology sub-forums list is so long that I sometimes skip it & just go to OT because I know there will be activity there. And while I like the Home & Garden sub-forum, due to the low number of posts, it would probably be better thrown back into OT where it'd get more traffic. Actually, a vast overhaul would be awesome. Just thinking out loud here:

Hardware and Technology:
* PC Help, Build, and Buying (per EliteRetard, great idea) - one place for help
* CPU's, Motherboards, Memory, and Storage (merge) - the guts of the box
* Video Cards, Graphics, and PC Gaming (merge) - the fun stuff
* Cases, Cooling, and Power Supplies (merge) - the backbone of the box
* Laptops, Notebooks, and Tablets (split off from smartphones) - aka Mobile Computing
* Smartphones, Webcams, and Communication Systems (Skype, GV, etc.) - cell phones, home VOIP like Ooma or Magic Jack, etc.
* Peripherals, Gadgets, and Printers
* Highly Technical & Distributed Computing (merge, since they're both fairly advanced topics)

Consumer Electronics:
* Digital & Video Cameras
* Audio/Video, Home Theater, and HTPC (merge)
* Console Gaming

Operating Systems & Networks:
* All Things Apple
* Software for Windows
* Servers, Networking, and Security
*Nix Software

Social:
* Off Topic
* Politics, News, and Discussion (merge)
* L & R
* Garage
* H&F
* Cooking (add)

Merchandise and Shopping:
* For Sale/Trade
* Hot Deals
* Free Stuff/Contents & Black Friday

I'm kind of on the stuff about free stuff...I honestly don't like having that drop-down box for whether it's a Deal or whatever. It's a small thing, but it bugs me haha. Anyway, I think this would be good for an overhaul - grouped categories for the hardware, to keep up with the times, a consumer section, lump all the OS stuff into one area, add cooking in since we all like food, and pretty much keep the rest the same.

I know it's a lot, but I think that approach would be easier...like, do I talk about iPhone stuff in the Apple forum or in the Gadget forum? Why are we discussing tablets along with smartphones, when smartphones are such a big category & people alternate between Windows tablets & Android/iOS tablets, or Surface laptops, which could all be joined under one group? Stuff like that.

Part of it depends on the community too...at first glance, merging Garage & Home would make sense, but not really because the Garage is definitely a very car-focused area that would get diluted with talking about topsoil options or how to fix a kitchen cabinet. But on the flip side, I don't think cooking should go into Health & Fitness because not all of the recipes that I like to share would be considered healthy, haha. I mean, if we wanted to get really concise with things, we could redo Hardware like this:

* PC Help
* PC innards
* PC structure
* Mobile Computing
* Communications
* Gadgets
* Hi-end Thinking

That's pretty simple...if I need help with selecting parts or building a system, go into the help sub-forum. If I want to talk about computer guts like the CPU or RAM, the innards section. For backbone stuff, the structure - case, power supply, etc. If it's a laptop, tablet, Chromebook, whatever - Mobile Computing. Anything video chat or audio chat related, whether it's webcams or smartphones or non-smartphones or VOIP stuff goes into Communications. Any type of gadget can go in that bucket, from computer-connected stuff like mice to maybe electronic toys. Then dump all of the high-level stuff in its own category.

Maybe merge all of the non-P&N/L&R stuff into OT and then allow the OP to choose from a set of tags which is equivalent to the names of the other social forums. That way when you browse OT, you'll see everything, but if you want Health and Fitness, you can search for posts with that tag.

Just a thought.

aren`t you the guy who posted that somebody passed away out of spite and in a malicious manner? I wouldn`t say a whole lot about the mods...
