I'd love seeing search improved/fixed or given the ability to sort. Pretty much everytime I search for something the results are roughly scrambled - I think it's better than it used to be at least because there does seem to be some rough semblance of "newest to oldest" (whereas "recent" posts could be multiple pages back before) but it's still pretty off.

Stop with all the useless sub-forums. Virtually no one posts in many forums, meaning virtually no one browses them, meaning the few posts that do go there just languish often unread. Plus it is really hard to determine the proper place to post. If your video card is not working on a motherboard in Windows 7 is this a post for "Video Cards and Graphics", "Motherboards", "Computer Help", "General Hardware", or "Operating Systems"?

I would look back over the last few months and eliminate any sub-forum with fewer than an average of 5 new threads/day. Merge them into forums with actual traffic so users get their questions answered and their thoughts seen.

For example, when I click on Power Supplies, I get on the first page posts that are 1 month old (that doesn't count the 6 stickies). That sub-forum just isn't used. Same goes for "Cases and Cooling" and "Peripherals" which all really belong in "General Hardware".

For example, what is the difference between SFF and HTPC? They are essentially one and the same with just a slight tweak in usage.

For example, the "*nix Software" sub-forum only shows 19 threads TOTAL in the last month.

Deleting the useless sub-forums would really help with making the site more clean, give more users more threads to view without having to click on dozens of pages, and give more visibility to new users who put posts in unused sub-forums then quit the site disappointed. And for the dedicated long-term posters, it would help us from loading a page 6 hours later and seeing nothing new (boring). I cut back my posting about 95% when all these sub-forums popped up since it is too boring to see nothing new and too tedious to click on 20 forums that might interest me.

If we had an upvote button i would spend my whole life(or maybe just a few minutes whatever it takes) finding a way to hack the system so i could upvote this eleventy million times. One of the HUGE turning points in the decline of the forums was when they added in all the subforums. Having them all together did mean you had to sort through more stuff to find what you were looking for but it also meant that you got way more eyeballs on your posts and so you got better answers to things .

Eliminate Politics & News. It's a cesspool. I spend almost all of my time there.

Add an area called the "Kitchen" where bad threads can be put. (Think "If you can't take the heat, stay out of the kitchen" and use less moderation there.)

That way, when a thread goes off track it can be moved there to let people hash it out. Requires less effort on the mod staff trying to clean up childish messes and allows the typical trolls to exhaust themselves.

Great input so far. Keep it up!

Can you offer this in more actionable terms? What do you not like about how Tapatalk works with the forums currently? What would you like to see changed, specifically?
Participated threads doesn't work, you have to use subscribed instead. It would be nice to just use subscribed for threads I'm currently interested in and participated to check up on all the ones I've, well, participated in.
Also search doesn't work in tapatalk but I've no idea whether that's to do with tapatalk or the forum.

Please don't change anything apart from at a technical level at the moment. You're going to get everyone chipping in with their own personal crusade but it would be nice to get the non controversial technical things sorted first.

(Also; what was the reason for the Saturday down time?)

Make it like L&R in that it's not public as well?

Just use the "new posts" thingy and you've pretty much got one forum with everything lumped in.

The "timeline" thing on tapatalk does this as well with the added bonus of an up/down vote thing if that floats your boat.

Yes, I've also often wondered what it would be like to see an entire forum full of threads started by alkemyst.

Embedded videos

You're welcome.

agree with this, so long as they don't autoplay.

the other thing is of course the slow-responding forum as a whole. Why does it take at least 5 seconds to load the AT off-topic forum page, then at least 2 seconds to load threads when forums load nearly instant everywhere else? It's the only reason I don't browse/post here as much anymore.

Get rid of Saturday downtime for maintenance.

Done.

This request has been approved and is being processed. Due to the holidays, we expect the change will take place within a matter of weeks. Our objective will be the complete elimination of the downtime period, rather than a rescheduling. You may see another downtime or two before we are able to enact this change, but it is approved and in process.

Wow

Oops. Meant trending not timeline.

And I meant to edit that not quote it.

i dont like the idea of embedded videos. they need to load and make the pages much slower .. more so when people have less than stellar connections.

I think what we have is pretty awesome.
I hate forums with large custom signatures, large custom avatars, embedded images/videos over a certain size, etc.

I think AT Forums does a great job at keeping it classy.

Also, I don't understand all the complaints about downtime and errors.
I rarely see a problem with these forums. They always seem to work fine for me.
Maybe you are just doing maintenance when I am not online (I'm Eastern time zone, 1st shift).

^^This lead to even more suggestions.

Why not allow them and be able to deactivate them in the control panel for other people with poor connection.

Why pay for the others with crap internet connection?

get rid of the weekly maintenance that is at one of the most prime times people use the forums. other forums much larger than AT don't even have to do things like that, or do it behind the scenes.

THIS!

Weekly maintenance should be eliminated altogether.

Much appreciate everyone's feedback so far - please keep them coming.

it's amazing how we've been complaining about this for YEARS and nothing was done about it. then a day later after a new admin comes in here, it gets addressed.

and i agree 100% with everyone saying get rid of all the subforums.

i remember the days when there were all tech forums here, and then you had off topic. and off topic was just that - off topic of tech stuff. we need to get back to that. it was great to be able to go into that forum and just read all different types of threads.

all of the "Consumer Electronics" forums were much better when they were in ATOT so you could just see all the stuff in there relating to cameras, a/v, etc. i don't know about now though with smartphones being so abundant, maybe keeping the mobile devices forum itself is good too.

but things like the garage, health and fitness, home and garden ... i liked it much more when that stuff was just in ATOT instead of their own subforums. although, the H&F one is nice now because you have the same few people who know what they are talking about. any time a health related thread happens in ATOT there is so much misinformation in there that if people took a lot of the advice in there, they would be no better off and possibly worse than if they had not taken it.

yep this x1000000000000000000000000000000000

i clearly remember how much of a decline in traffic happened at that point. i wish there was a graph of it or something.

oh also ... some way to "close out" or "x out" the announcements at the top of the forum. i hate how right now i see 3 announcements. i shouldn't have to see them after i click on them if i don't want to. it's dumb that the forum starts like 1/3 down the screen because of those dumb announcements.
