Both my wife's SD780is and my mom's SD750is died with an lens error (lens gets stuck open and won't retract) in the past 3 weeks.

While my mom's is about 2 years old, my wife's is barely over a year.

Is this a common issue with Canon's? Neither has been dropped/abused and both are in excellent condition otherwise.

Um - just google "canon lens stuck" - you'll answer your own question

Panasonic Point and Shoots are hardy in my experience. I've had a little FS3 live in my pocket, bag, etc for 2 years with no special treatment - still works like a champ. YMMV I suppose.

I had a Canon S3 that had the lens problem. It was only 3 years old, and its been dead a year now. In my case I let the batteries go dead in the camera. I've read others who had the same thing happen (the lens got stuck after battery died). A few times I got the camera to close and open again (out of a few dozen tries) so I know the mechanics were ok. I didn't drop the camera or anything like that. I have a friend who is a pro photographer and her 5D stopped working and she switched brands saying Canon had lost its reliability.

I know a few years back a lot of video cameras died because of bad sensors from China. Maybe Canons are failing because of something like that and not design per se etc. I was looking at buying a SX30 but I dont want another paper weight.

My wife and I have a canon sd750 - its probably 3 years old and still going strong. In fact, its my wifes favorite purse camera. The lithium battery gives the camera a nice slim design, and with 7 megapixel it takes great pictures.

From what I have seen, just about all brands of digital cameras have lens or lens cover problems. A couple of years ago I gave my step daughter a sony camera, and the lens cover on it stopped working.

My wife and I probably have 5 canon cameras between us, and we have had zero issues to date.

Have you called Canon? In my experience, when there was a known issue, they've replaced my camera several years after its warranty expired.

They absolutely will, even if you don't have the original proof of purchase. My experience with Canon's CS has been superb.

With that said, P&S cams just aren't as robust anymore unless you spend $200 or more. My old A85 from 2004 still works like it's brand new..even though you can hear sand grinding in the gears for the lens. People are amazed when I show them pics from it. "ITS ONLY 4 MEGAPIXELS!?"

I have a Canon Powershot G3 from 2003. Still works fine.

I have a SD600 handmedown from my mom which I washed after snowboarding and still works. The battery drains quick (either a short or the battery is screwed up), so I have to charge everytime before I use it.

I have a Rebel that's worked fine for a year. I have a 7D that's gotten waves of sea water over it and I have taken it into the snow while snowboarding and I've just tossed it in a pile of snow while resting before. Works fine.

My S95 is brand new but no issues yet.

Canon is real good about warranty though. My 17-55mm lens failed but they repaired it in no time for a decent price.

I can't complain about Canon either. Bought an XT new. Sold to my sister and still working great.

Had a used refurbished 40D for awhile, no problems there.

Bought an A80(4MP) used on ebay for $30 a couple years ago. Had the sensor replaced for FREE out of warranty. Still works great. Have taken some awesome shots with it as well.

Currently own an S95 and love it.

called up canon, and you can exchange your broken canon with one of their refurbished camera, I think they have some G11 refurbished if you send them back your old/broken sd camera and pay around $230ish.

There is a thread over in FW:

yup, got the same lens error on my sd750 last thanksgiving as well. This is the very first time a camera's gone bad on me.

I'm thinking about trading this in to upgrade to a canon t2i kit but a little leery about the jump up.
I have zero knowledge about DSLR's but when I see some of the pics taken by them, my jaws drop...

I'm sure Canons P&S reliability is just as high as any other brands.

With that said, I've put ~20k photos thru a Panasonic FZ7, another ~8k photos thru a Panasonic ZS3, and about hundreds thru an LZ8 without issue.
I've = myself, my wife, and my kids - the ZS3 is particularly robust.
