You read this right, just in time for Valentine's day, the vagina specialists in VA house GOP have mandated vaginal probes for women seeking abortions. When Republicans say something should be left up to the states, they mean your health and dignity should be left up to goons like these:

http://www.newsleader.com/article/20120215/NEWS01/202150321/Va-House-passes-tough-abortion-bills

And on a 63-36 vote, the House passed a bill that requires women to have a "transvaginal ultrasound" before undergoing abortions.

Opponents said the bills were unprecedented intrusions into the prerogatives and decisions not just of pregnant women but of women trying to avoid pregnancy.

The ultrasound legislation would constitute an unprecedented government mandate to insert vaginal ultrasonic probes into women as part of a state-ordered effort to dissuade them from terminating pregnancies, legislative opponents noted.

"We're talking about inside a woman's body," Del. Charnielle Herring said in an emotional floor speech. "This is the first time, if we pass this bill, that we will be dictating a medical procedure to a physician."

Wow, this is impressively terrible.

edit: Sounds like the VA House is wishing all the pregnant ladies a happy valentines day.....with a temporary 'toy' present...... /s

edit 2:if the woman has never before given birth it might have to be a pretty small government to be able to.....ahhh too soon.

I applaud this yet another step towards Revolution especially against Republican rule.

Each thing they pass such as this is dealing their demise.

You would think... but the money keeps buying the lies which in turn buys the votes.

I'm guessing the women will be forced to pay for this unwanted medical procedure as well. So much for personal freedom, or the Republican slogan of "government shouldn't get between you and your doctor".

Virginia is slowly being taken over by illegals and most of them are old-fashioned catholics and most of THOSE are from one country. The culture is slowly changing. Expect more stuff like this in the future as politicians bend over to accommodate them. I know Virginia may have been considered a conservative christian state long before, but there didnt used to be quite so much nonsense going through the government. As a rule the state generally prioritized individual freedom over christian ideals.

I see it as a cost saving measure to ensure that there is in fact a pregnancy before a far more risky and costly procedure is performed. You're for reducing the cost of health care aren't you?

Not sure if serious.. But pretty sure a abortion is lower cost than a ultrasound. My wife just had a ultrasound and it was billed to the insurance for 1500... Fucking scam it cost that much.

A quick google search put a abortion around 1000 or less.

Are you getting outraged about a doctor having to insert a probe before inserting other probes that will dismember the fetus?

You're correct - not serious.

An obscure news source with a bias is used to create a thread with a sensationalist title including the words "vaginal probe". If a rightie had created a thread like this it would have had the title altered.

If an abortion actually does cost a grand, I see now why opponents are against them as a form of birth control.

I sincerely, sincerely doubt that the people pushing this are doing so on behalf of their Mexican constituents.

I'd love to see any evidence whatsoever that says otherwise.

Where did you get your information that such a probe is only required before late term abortions?

We need a government small enough to probe a woman's vagina with I guess.

Hopefully this will lead to more VA women coming here to Maryland for abortions. That should help our state's economy. MD has its flaws, but at least it's a solidly pro-choice state.

Between these types of ideas and the contraception issue, it boggles my mind that any rational thinking woman could vote with the Republicans right now.

Facile lies. Changes in women's body chemistry are entirely accurate as an indicator of pregnancy. The measure would force abortion providers to purchase very expensive equipment, raising the price.

That's BS. There are many ways to verify a pregnancy, this is not one of them. It's pretty clear these idiots just want to add another disincentive. Government deciding what medical procedures someone should have is a terrible idea, that should be up to you and your doctor.

Agreed 100%. Any supposed "conservative" who would agree to such government intrusion into people's lives should be ashamed. That bill is flat out disgusting.

I wish the GOP could make up it's mind. Legislating what people do in their bedrooms is somehow necessary to people like Rick Santorum, yet making birth control available to hospital or university employees is a prime example of the government intruding in your personal life. When people say the GOP is batshit crazy, this is one of the issues that leads people to believe that...

But it's not unconstitutional and you should always follow the law.

Yeah the law is stupid and unnecessary. Bad idea.

Getting the vagina probed is what got the lady to the abortion clinic to start with.

If the government wants to make something uncomfortable, require an anal probe.

You're pretty despicable. It's completely unnecessary to confirm pregnancy.

It's only an added cost. You're for reducing the cost of health care aren't you?
