Think my TV is broken.

So I turned on my TV the other day and the screen never "clicked" on. The audio came in but the screen stayed black. I turned it off and then back on again and the picture came in fine. However, after a few minutes, the picture became distorted and started filling with thin black lines until it was kind of "pulled" away from the screen and the whole thing went black again (with the sound still working fine). I've verified that it is in fact the TV and not the cable box or video input. This now happens every time I turn on the tv. My question is it worth trying to get fixed or should I start saving for a new one and deal with my little 20" CRT from school?

This is a 37" Sony CRT (non-flat screen) TV, it's about six or eight years old I think.

You are probably out of luck. It could be a simple problem, but it likely isn't. For the cost of repairing it, you could get yourself a new 32" CRT. It wouldn't be the same as a 37" TV, but it'll be close.

Have you tried banging the side of the TV with your hand as hard as possible? Just a though.

I've got a similiar issue with the TV my brothers and I bought my parents a few years back. 32" SDTV and the component input broke. The TV was like $288 brand-new and they want $100 to repair it. No desire to go to an HDTV though.

Look at is as an opportunity. 2007 is the year of HD. They are pretty cheap now. Get yourself a nice LCD HDTV.

time for new tv... even a new crt would not be much more than the repair bill. One of the flybacks is toast.

My parent's 27" Sony had about the same problem - The horizontal output transistor ( big honking high current high voltage transistor ) fried itself. $6.00 later ( and $5.00 for damn shipping ) it was good as new.

Not hard at all if you've got a little desoldering wick and a soldering iron. Dont really have to worry about discharge from the tube as it was left off for a few hours before working on it.

Wow
The exact same thing happened to me on my 37 " CRT Sony. It was like 10 years old, so didn't care. I got a 61" DLP HDTV.
