It's amusing to see people claim Java is slow. It's been as fast as native code for a long time now. Check out this article: http://www.javaworld.com/jw-02-1998/jw-02-jperf.html and note that the article is from Feb. 1998.

I think Mad Hatter is a great idea and think it has a very good chance at succeeding especially in these tough economic times when companies are trying to save every penny they can.

The kind general people use, because if it doesn't start up right a way (atleast a splash screen or something) people click on it again and again, causing atleast 2 copies to start. These are the same people that double-click on links, but they're the majority.

Even for those of us who do know better it's annoying. Some of the developers where I work use an app called Together (recently bought by Borland) which is done in Java and it takes a good 30s to startup, which is insane in my mind.

For what types of applications is startup time an issue?

Any type of application. Especially if you are in tech support(?) I can give you a few examples from personal experience:
*I used to teach a class that used a program called Primavera for shceduling. It took abt. 2 minutes for the program to start. In a class that lasts 90 minutes, you spend 5 minutes waiting for everyone to have the program running on their computer in a lab. Not to mention the fact that the application might crash/abruptly terminate. I would say I would lose atleast 10 minutes everytime this way . Of course, since this was a scheduling class, I had already made sure the teaching material covered only abt 75 minutes
*Yor client calls you and you need to refer to some document becuase the client wants to know something urgently. You cannot say "wait for a couple of minutes whiole the application loads." or "I will call you back as soon as I am able to view the document.
*Your website is to go 'live' in a few minutes. You are informed that one of the images on the server needs to be edited. Again, you CANNOT wait for image-editing program (e.g. Phoitoshop/Gimp) to take a minute atleast... to load.

Well, If it is running on a linux enviroment, and running mainly C and C++ Apps. How can they claim it to be a java os? Also, Maybe companies dont support their products usually, but If you post in just about any linux forum about almost any application, I can garentee that you will get some support if nothing more then "Thats a bug in the software"

Cogman, this isn't for Joe Schmoe that likes posting in forums and IRC channels.
This is for Joe IT Guy that needs direct support NOW.

Well, your experience with Java browser applets hardly speaks for the language as a whole. Java IS much more than browser applets.

You're talking about GUI applications. There are a lot of applications that don't require any user interaction for which the startup time is irrelevant.

Less important perhaps, but I wouldn't say totally irrelevant.
