Thinking About A Site Where Donations Get Refunded If You Don't Reach Your Goal

Let's say your goal is $10,000 and the deadline is in 1 year.

After the year is up, if you don't reach your goal, everyone who donated would get a full refund.

I think this would encourage people to donate a lot more with confidence that their money isn't being wasted.

I've never done a kickstarter or Indigogo etc but is there not an option to do a refund? If I did do one and did not reach the goal or was not able to deliver for any reason I wouldn't want to just take people's money without delivering anything. I guess this is why I'm not rich like that crypto badger dude.

Been playing around in Protocase designer to get an idea of how much it would cost to build a rackmount case as the options here in Canada suck for that sort of thing. If I was to do it I'd probably do a kickstarter as the more I can get made the cheaper they are per unit.

With Kickstarter, if the project doesn't hit their funding goal, then nobody pays anything and the project doesn't go forward. But there's no refund if the project isn't completed (for the most part).
It sounds like OP is suggesting something where everyone gets a refund if the project isn't completed in time. Kind of a fundamental flaw though, in theory you spend the funding money while you're working on the project... so where does this $10,000 come from after a year? Does it just get held in escrow, and you don't get it until you're done? What's the point there?

It's a tiny niche I don't see being widely useful. but I could be wrong. Let's say you want to buy 1000ac of rainforest as a preserve, and it's gonna cost $n. You have a year to raise funds, or it'll be sold off as a palm plantation. You don't know if $n is even possible, but you start a campaign to try to make it happen. People can donate money and know for sure their money will go to the stated goal, or they'll get their money back.

Well, that would be workable under Kickstarter as-is.

What happens in this scenario? Randy decides to build an ultra realistic, interplanetary first person shooter game. So realistic that you will need a compass with a working ring on it while on Jupiter's moons. He needs $15K and sets a one year deadline. He gets donations of $1K per month. After 11 months he has $11K and is $4K short of his goal. Randy then attaches some powerful engines to the earth and spins it backwards so that time goes back 5 months. Is Randy back $6K or does he stay at $11K and can now make his goal? Or do the people get their money back?

Gizmo, keep posting. You make this place fun.
