I have decided to treat myself to a new monitor. Currently I use a 1920 x 1200 TN panel. I'm seeking opinions on a new monitor in the resolution specified above. I'm willing to pay somewhere around $5-$600.

I have been eying up a couple on Amazon (I have a credit I'd like to use there).

Dell: http://www.amazon.com/Dell-UltraShar...ds=2560+x+1440

Asus: http://www.amazon.com/PB278Q-27-Inch...ds=2560+x+1440

The Dell is an IPS, the Asus PLS.

I mostly game FPS's and surf the web etc. with the occasional movie.

You are going the right way, ips on a game like bf3 really improves the atmosphere and the entertainement especially on the new maps imho. Will really show at bf4. So you have a good experience in front of you. Congrats. I dont see the big difference ips or pls. Good tech to my eyes and same flaws. The screens you have selected is as i recall the same speed for gaming. Good enough but not stellar.

Consider the Qnix QX2710. (Amazon link, but more expensive)

Cheaper, and overclockable to 120hz+ (at least for the DVI-only versions).

No qnix.. uggg so much light bleed you will think the sun is rising is every scene. Customer service has been poor as well. In BRIGHT screens its a nice monitor that overclocks well. Unfortunately few games are bright enough to make the light bleed unnoticeable

I got mine for 270$ ... but I ordered it from accessorieswhole qoo10 Singapore store, overclocked it to 110 Hz without any problem, but I am running it daily at 96Hz cuz there is lot of calibration profile at 96Hz

I don't think there is any question here that you should get the Dell. The IPS is superior and Dell uses A+ panels in their Ultrasharp series. The best part about Dell is the three year warranty and quality of customer service.

The Ultrasharp line is warranted to be virtually perfect on delivery. No glaring light bleed, one bright pixel and you can call them and they'll have a brand new one sent to you the same day with return shipping covered. Good luck getting that out of Asus...............

Thanks for the replies so far... I saw the Overlord, but I'll have to research it a bit more I've never heard of the brand. I realize the Dell I posted is an older model too. One thing I don't really care for is a glossy screen, so I have to take that into consideration.

Lol!

Sorry, just laughing at your description of your light bleed.

Yes, unfortunately they are ebay monitors and subject to some risk of panel quality (light bleed being the biggest concern; although not all panels have them, some definitely do). They are, however, also capable of overclocking - which no other IPS/PLS panels (Catleap 2B/OverLord X270 can overclock too) are capable of, especially at the 1440p level. They are definitely the cheapest among those three options.

Viewsonic vp2770 a touch more but worth it

I totally agree. The Viewsonic does not use PWM dimming, so it is easier on the eyes (hard to find in an LED monitor.) I have one and it sits right next to a Catleap. The Viewsonic looks much better and the stand is awesome.
