Thinking about buying a Bajaj Chetak scooter.

I live with my fiancee in a western suburb of Chicago. We both take the same commuter train line to and from work Mon through Fri. To get to the train, we have to drive about 2 miles on stop and go traffic on a 30 mph road to get to the train station. This is a boring ride in my car, and costs about 3 bucks a day for parking. I am looking into buying a scooter for getting to the train station during the warm summer months. It would be free for me to park, and be a lot more fun to drive than my car.

My brother lives about 2 miles from me, my parents live about 10 miles(20 minutes) away from me, and a few other friends are also close, so if I got this scooter I would probably drive it around town also.

I found a used 2002 Bajaj Chetak in my area with 2500 miles on it for $1300. It seems like a good deal.
Here are the specs:
All steel monocoque chassis
Low emission 4-stroke engine,
145cc, air cooled, 9 HP, overhead camshaft,
oil pump circulation, oil filter, automatic
variable advance electronic spark ignition
Electric and kick start
4 speed manual transmission
12 volt electrical system
Variable rate coil spring suspension with anti-dive
front suspension, adjustable front/rear suspension
3.50 X 10 tires, 4 ply rating
Top speed - 55 mph
Curb wt. 255.7 lbs.
Max wt. 564.4 lbs.

The MSRP on the newer models is:
2004 Models MSRP* $2699
2003 Models MSRP* $2299

I don't want a motorcycle because I want to get something my fiancee will and could drill also. I know I'll look dorky on it, but I don't really care about, and I'm a computer geek anyways so it fits my profile.

I've seen 80cc Honda Elites from the mid-80's going for $800+ dollars around here, and I would feel more comfortable buying a 2 year old scooter for $1300 than a 20 year old one for $800. Anyone have any experience with these types of scooters? Any recommendations on other scooters?

Whatcha mean by weird?

Also, I would like a Vespa, but they cost 2 or 3 times as much. I am looking for something under 1500 and newish.

My friend bought one of these for $2000 about a month ago.

It's a 1995. I know you said "no motorcycles", but is there any reason it's going to be easier for your fiancee to ride the scooter than an actual bike? She's going to need to get the same license for the scooter.

Anyway, there's no way in hell I'd spend $1300 on a scooter when I can't even ride it on the freeway. Spring for something a bit more functional.

Actually, in Illinois I would need a class M license for a scooter 150cc and under. If you want to drive a motorcycle you need to have a Class L license for something over 150cc. Also, my fiancee wouldn't drive a motorcycle around, but she would drive this scooter around. I think that if I had a motorcycle, I would probably kill myself on it. I think I would probably be a bit more subdued by only have 9 HP instead of 50hp+.

So what will you do when it rains, snows or freezes over? Take the bus again?

Scooters/Motorcycles get very tiring in stop and go traffic. How about a bicycle?

Wow! That engine has some impressive longevity specs.

Looks really cool. Go for it!

Normally I would agree, but that clearly isn't what he is looking for here.

GoPeds may as well be a toy compared to this thing. Much less top speed, drastically lower reliability, loud, etc.

If it rains and in the wintertime, I would drive my car to the station, and use the metered spots.

LML Vespa is a piece of crap compared to the Chetak I had a Chetak back in high school and it was damn sturdy and reliable - and fast. Had a great pick up and felt safer than any motorcycle I had ever driven.

THEY SELL BAJAJ IN THE US??

Those things are tanks..and are quite decent in the rain.

Just don't try drifting one with non-wokring front brakes....I have the scars back up that statement.

They are good scooters, decent pick-up and mileage..but they are pretty barebones...so dont expect fancy stuff.

But they are reliable.

AIM me or PM me.. this stupid error messages deleted my old message..

i suggest getting the bajaj.. there is a guy across from my window that has one.. and he loves it.. for 2 grand he got a 150cc bike and plenty of power to get him around. He technically can get on to the freeway but he doesnt.. so far he tops out at about 65-70.. he says he can go a bit faster if needed... legally in CA you need 11.5hp or 150cc to get on to the freeway. or is it 175cc.. anycase.. he hasnt done so as yet..
