I got a 9mm. I plan to do pretty much all of my shooting at the range. 9mm ammo is cheaper and the gun is easier to shoot.

I compared a Sig Sauer P220, a Glock 21, Glock 30, and a Springfield 1911A1 this afternoon; I'm sold on the Glock 30. The Springfield had the most kick, the Glock 21 and the Sig were decent but all three were so large I didn't feel I could grasp them comfortably. The Glock 30 fit comfortably, had less recoil than the other three, and overall resulted in better groupings. In any event, the 9mm v. 45 debate has been rehashed often here, so there should be a wealth of archived threads.

Both calibers will do the job if you do yours.

The 220 is a nice gun, mags are expensive. The 226 is a nice gun, mags are still expensive. But, you can find trade in 226's generally pretty easier than 220's, so if you're not looking to buy new you can do better. Trade in 226's are in the $400 range.

The other thing to consider is that the weight of 15 rounds of 9mm is going to be greater than that of 8 in 45.

Dont the Navy SEALs or Delta Force use the 9mm? I remember seeing it on Discovery or TLC. They said something to the affect of ".45 or 9mm wont matter, both will kill a tango when we shoot him in the head."

Go with what you're more comfortable with.

currently i have a glock 17(9mm) and held a friends 1911, man that is one nice feeling gun in your hand. i like 9mm and especially glocks because their are so many parts and ammo is everywhere same with the 1911 but the 9mm is just less $$$.

that being said, my next handgun would be a 1911 but it is just a matter of personal preference.

The P220 is a nice pistol, built like a tank and accurate. To tell you the truth magazine cap doesn't mean that much to me. If I was in the military or police where I might get into a drawn out fight and need the extra capacity it would be different. But I just like having something for the range and to use for personal protection. I use a P220 for my house gun and a P239 for carry neither holds more than 8 rounds. The .45 or 9mm will both put someone down for the count with some good JHP ammo. The main thing is to practice IMO shot placement is more important than caliber.

Lets be honest here.

At the end of the day theres not much difference on the side that goes bang.
I'd take the 9mm. More capacity on the mag, cheaper ammo, less recoil.

Don't buy the GI model, you'll hate yourself for it. At least spring for the Mil-Spec model. The GI Model is cheaper yes, but the Mil-Spec's upgrades are well worth it.

I like the way the GI model looks. I want one that looks like a WWII model.

P226

Cheap for plinking, handles +P+ defense loads with ease, and high capacity.

Have you shot both of these pistols before? I was really close to going with 9mm until I shot a 45. My marksmanship was much better and I find it more comfortable to shoot. Try them both out if you haven't and go with the one that appeals to you. Those SIGs are really nice, you can't go wrong with either.

I'd go with the one with the cheapest ammo. Prices only seem to be going up these days and I expect that they're not getting any cheaper.

Dick's Sporting Goods seems to have ammo sales every weekend. i think a box(50) of 9mm is normally like $8 or $9 and they have them on sale for like $5 or $6. I know they do the same with some of the other calibers but not sure on prices because I only have a 9mm atm.
