Thinking about buying a pistol

yeah, Wolf is cheap but isn't there something about the way its made that can be harmful to guns or something? i thought i read something about that somewhere.

Steel cased ammo can be rough on the extractor.

Last I looked the CCI Blazer aluminum cased ammo was about the same price as the Wolf without this drawback.

No, Wolf is perfectly fine to use. The issue was laquer buildup in the chamber. This was never a big problem, and even if it was an issue you were worried about they changed some time ago from laquer to something else (Cant think of it this morning....)

No, Wolf is perfectly fine to use. The issue was laquer buildup in the chamber. This was never a big problem, and even if it was an issue you were worried about they changed some time ago from laquer to something else (Cant think of it this morning....)

They use a polymer coating now.

Oh I am! I've ran both in my AR, no problems. My AR runs anything, I have yet to find something it wont chew up and spit out everytime I pull the trigger.

I've actually been looking at getting a 9mm also. I'd really like a USP Compact but would probably end up getting a SIG.

My question is about used handguns. Good.....Bad??? I would end up having to get a used handgun because they are cheaper. Would the barrel be the only thing I would really need to worry about, and can't you just swap out new ones???

I have an XD-9, and it is great. That caliber will cost you more money every time you go to the range, though. But if you've got the bucks, then enjoy!

Nothing wrong with a used pistol. Just take it to the range and try it out. Some heavily used pistols might have parts that have loosened and arent working like they should.
But on the whole, nothing wrong with a used gun. And every part is replaceable so if you buy a used pistol and something is bad you can get it fixed.

i have two 9 mm's (92F and a Kahr MK9) cuz the ammo was cheaper (try to go to range about once a month and the cost of those rounds can add up pretty quick)....

just keep some JHP rounds for home defense and just hope that you never need to use them...

Extreme wear on a pistol is fairly easy to spot.

What shape is the bore in (bright, dark, pitted, bluged, rifilng worn down, intact crown, etc..)? How's the finish look? Is the slide loose or tight? Does it actually work (dry fire)? Obvious wear on the controls/slide stop? How does the breech face look? etc...

Have you fired both of them? Which do you prefer?

What about the 226 in .40 cal. The 40 has almost the same ballistic properties as the 45 and a ten round mag (atleast in CA that is the largest you can buy). The government agency I work for issues the Sig P226 40 cal with the "light rail" for a tac light.

If this is your first gun, I would go with the 9mm just because the ammo is cheaper. My first gun was a .40 Sig 239. I eventually bought a used 9mm Sig 226 just so I could shoot the cheaper 9mm ammo. You can practice almost twice as much with a 9mm compared to a 45.

This is actually very important. It takes a lot of time at the range before you can reliably hit anything with a pistol, and .45 cost twice as much as 9mm. If you go to the range a couple times month that can really add up.

That said, I have a 226 and a 220 and they're both superb pistols. You could hardly go wrong.

I tried out a friends Sig at our last competition. My times are normally around 40 seconds to over a minute. I ran the sig in under 30 seconds. I probably would have been close to if not at first place if I hadnt completely borked the mag change.
My mag change went *very* poorly.

gunbroker.com (I think .com) is a good place to check used values. Granted, some of the stuff there is a fraud, and some sells for way more then it should....Much like Ebay.....but it is a useful research tool none the less.

I havent had a chance to fire either the p226 or the p220

im going to see if i can find a range that rents pistols that way i can try both out

anyone know of one in the Phoenix area?

did that in the early 90's for awile till i found i liked the ruger 9mm's
for some strange reason i couldnt get good groupings with any of the glocks
so there out of the picture but did decent with the brownings and s&w's and a few others

i do want to stick with either the 9mm or the .45 so the .40's are out
also i will be getting a concealed carry permit so the carry versions are mostly what im looking at

the cheaper ammo may definatly be a plus since i do plan on puttin in range time again
