Right now my computer specs are as follows.

athlon xp2000+
1gb ram
radeon 7500
120 gig western digital
NEC 3540A burner

My dad wants a family computer and i was thinking that i could give this to him and get a new one. I think i'm settling on this one and i would like to hear some opinions. Also my main goal is to achieve performance close to x2 4400+ and was wondering if this would do it.

DFI lanparty ultra-d
xfx geforce 7800 gt 256mb
opteron 165
2gb mushkin high performance 2-3-2-6 timings
antec truepower2 psu 550w
artic cooling freezer for my CPU

comes out to around $1100 from new egg.

That'd do it, although you dont' need that large a PSU a good 400W will be enough if you're not going SLI.

Save money on the RAM it's not very important, low latency seems to be the best balance between budget and performance.

Yeah you can definitely get away with cheaper RAMs. Try looking into 2GB OCZ Value Series or Corsair Value Select.

kool. so i think i'm gonna go with a 450 watt fortron then its only 50 bucks. the ram isnt too expensive its around 200. Wouldnt i need overclockers ram to overclock the cpu? Also what are dividers all about?

DFI requires a PS that is 480 watts and has at least 25+ amps on the 12 volt. You guys would spend $1100 on a system and be a cheapskate with the PS? C'mon...

Also my main goal is to achieve performance close to x2 4400+ and was wondering if this would do it.

The Opteron should do anywhere from 2400 -> 2700 mhz, and yes, don't be surprised if it tops out at 2400 mhz, that's just the way these things go

The RAM isn't too expensive, but you can shave $40 off without sacrificing any noticable performance loss. You can use RAM dividers without much penalty (couple of % difference).

The DFI will work fine with the fortron, there's no skimping involved as that's all that would be needed for a SLI setup.

I was under the impression that i would need good overclocking ram to overclock the opteron. So you're saying that i can get away with this by buying cosair value select ram?

I'm confused one person says DFI requires at least 480 watts and another says the fortron will be fine. Also another thing i dont think i'm skimping on the PSU, the PSU's i mention has good efficiency and dual 12v rails of at least 18amps and above.

One last thing i wont be running SLI ever. Hope that clears some things.
