Go get it, the combat is hack n' slashy and awesome. Go check Youtube for Witcher 2 video's if you're unsure.

Is the the first game in the series any good? gog has it onsale for 10 bucks thought I might get it too just because its cheap?

Sounds like the 2nd game is something I will like with the combat, and all the different weapons and armors.

Combat in TW1 is totally different than in TW2. TW1 uses a chained attack system, eg click to attack, time another click to chain a 2nd more powerful attack, then a 3rd click, etc. The combat is not really that bad IMO, but some people don't like it. Overall though, TW1 is one of the best RPGs I've ever played. It's well worth $10.

Im downloading the first one now, 10 dollars is too cheap to pass up. Ive heard mostly good things about the 2nd and im gonna grab it too.

Ive run out of games to play at the moment and needed to find something to bridge the gap between now and RAGE, skyrim and BF3 ect. so im sure ill have plenty to do between then and now.

TW1 is to me a slower game and also longer with a bit more to do. To many they found it rather boring but I believe it's because they didn't take the time to get past the prologue or first chapter. From about 2-4 it gets much better and ultimately you'll probably like that you took the time to play it. It will help you understand the world for TW2, so if you have the interest do complete the first one first.

TW2 however is just plain awesome. Continues on with an interesting story, while vastly improving the graphics while also vastly changing other things such as combat and various other things you do. So don't expect what you learned in TW1 to carry over. I also found TW2 to be a fair bit more fun to play, but it is also shorter. At first it starts off somewhat hard (although I believe they have patched that), and gets significantly easier as you progress.

It is a very good series and all I can suggest is for you to just hang in there with TW1 because the latter half is greatly improved from the first bit, and TW2 is even better.

Yea it took me till the start of act 2 to get into witcher 1; definitely a game to keep at for a bit. I think it was the better game but I enjoyed witcher 2 more. witcher 2 combat is very limited and I think they 'dumb' down the mechanics. Also potions seemed less useful. I like the idea of having to use them before battles but the idea doesn't seem to work out very well because most of the time you don't know what you will face and the potions don't last very long.
-
Anyways witcher 2 was a nice story (presentation was good) and is worth two plays due to major branch in the game but I don't really remember many 'wow' moments.
-
Not quite related but along the same lines of an open world rpg is dragon knight saga; if you want a long game that has a broder mix of magic and combat.

Hum. Let us know what you think of witcher 1

TW1 was unbearable

The combat was alright if clunky, but the camera drove me mad and the voice acting sucked and the story seemed pointless and the dialogue was lousy and I felt like the interface and controls were mediocre at best.

TW2 might be great but TW1 made sure I'm not going to find out until it's about $5.

Why are you THINKING about buying Witcher 2? You should be buying it right neow!

While W1 was a great game, it pales in comparison to Witcher 2.

I enjoy what I played of Witcher 1, got more than midway through Chapter 2, but just stopped playing. It got to the point where I just had too many quests and junk in my sac, and the prospect of having to run from point A to point H and be there within a specific span of hours to collect blood or some such from yet another mob to complete a quests, on top of constantly reorganizing my bag and keeping track of recipes....simply forced me to quit playing.

Don't get me wrong--i think it is an awesome game and I may finish it some day, but I think I have developed game ADD as I have gotten older, as this is the type of game that would have been well within my wheelhouse a decade ago.

Witcher 1 gives you an idea of what a witcher does and his backgound etc... and some things you do impacts on Witcher 2 in a small way,Witcher 2 is a great game but its a lot shorter then W1,personally I thought both are great.

I'm glad I played W1 and W2 in that order.

The Witcher is my favorite RPG ever. Mostly because of it's story, characters and setting; I've played no other RPG that comes close to it in terms of those three things. If I'm gonna play an RPG, it needs an awesome storyline, and The Witcher fit the bill.

The Witcher 2 took everything great about the original and basically turned it up to 11. It's also extremely different (combat system being the most notable change). Someone above me called it "hack 'n' slash"; while this is partly true, the combat in TW2 is NOT as simple as hacking-and-slashing. It's actually extremely strategic and methodic. The game is very unforgiving, and if you run into a group of enemies waving your sword around, you'll die very quickly. You MIGHT survive if you play on easy, but otherwise, expect to be slaughtered.

There were some odd design quirks in TW2 that were a downgrade from TW1, but for the most part, TW2 was an amazing sequel. Seriously, the characters, the dialogue, and the storytelling were done so well, I dare you to find another RPG that does it as well as The Witcher series.

For sure. Both are great games, and any self respecting fan of RPGs will play both.

I just cant play Witcher 1, it drives me nuts. I just hate the controls and the way combat works. To the point where I cant enjoy the story.

Witcher 2 is however one of the best games I have played ever. Just love it. Pure awesomeness...

Thinking about buying Witcher 2

Don't think... Buy it!!

The production values of the game are so high, and if you liked the storytelling style of Mass Effect then you'll love this game.

Meh. Get it if you want. I personally could not stand the Witcher 2. I didn't like the combat, the dialogue, the graphics, etc. I was universally underwhelmed. I would give you my steam copy if I could, as I am certain that I will never pick it up again.

I'm playing TW1 right now. First impressions is that it's ok, but has a few problems.

Voice acting is quite bad - feels like it belongs in a different century.

Story execution is a mess - I found myself lost/swamped in quests. I also found myself in dialogue wondering what on earth are they talking about. Often in RPGs it feels like the storywriters forgot that the player (unlike the storywriter) does not know the story until after having played. So as player you lack the background knowledge to understand what is going on, unless the storywriter took the time to analyze carefully what they player would know at any particular point, and thus what needs to be explained/spelled out. TW1 suffers badly from this. I think it comes down to lack of QC on the story execution.

Combat and game machanics - I think it's pretty good. It has the balance lacking in DA. (DAO - too slow, DA2 - way too fast)

Character model reuse is pretty high. I understand the need to do this from a ressource point of view, but really it hurts the overall experience badly. I can accept that non-key models are reused to some extent - (ok so the noname merchant in city A happens to be the identical twin brother of noname merchant in city B - I can live with that) but key NPC's should never be reused models. It breaks the illusion.

With that said, I certainly enjoy TW1 a lot, and will continue to play it + TW2 when I get that far. The universe is interesting and story telling styles are great, and the game seems to hold a tremendous amount of finer details. Characters seems pretty well written, and I feel reasonably attached to Geralt as main protagonist.

The Witcher 1 is like a novel IMO. You don't get instant gratification, but if you stick with it to the end, it's well worth it.

However, you don't have to play it in order to enjoy Witcher 2. So if you don't end up liking it for whatever reason, you can just skip it and go straight to the sequel.

Just got to chapter 2, and it's the only game I can think about playing right now. Portal 2 and LA Noire can wait till I finish Witcher 2.

It is pretty hard on normal difficulty, at least during the prologue and parts of chapter 1. But I am sure you knew that already.

Dont bother. This game has a horrid combat system. I stopped playing after many, many attempts to kill the first boss (Kayran). Its riddled with bad visual angles, QTEs, and directed/timed actions that ruin the entire first boss experience.

EDIT: I like what GOG is doing and thats where i bought the game, but its a horrid combat system. Just atrocious.

You can turn off the QTE's.

Once you learn how to play Witcher 2 properly, even playing on hard difficulty is easy.

That boss is more of an exception to the rule. That's not how the combat works during the rest of the game.

I loved the Kayran battle, it was incredibly epic. Frustrating? Yes. But it felt great when I beat it. Probably took ten or more attempts of trial and error, but very satisfying when that sucker finally died.

Witcher 2 is one of the top 10 RPG's of all time. Witcher 1 is horrifically bad. Like, train-wreck level bad.

Im about halfway through chapter 1 in the first game, it took some getting use to but im having some fun with it for sure.

The combat is kinda neat once I got the hang of it, and the character leveling looks like its pretty involved which I like.

So far id give the first game a favorable rating

Once I beat it im gonna move on to the 2nd game just because I dont like playing two games in the same series at the same time, so ive def decided to get it.
