Thinking about divorcing outlook

I've been using outlook exspress for years(if you really must know, since 1999)
And I would like some opinions on another better free email program? The must have features I need are, an email program that is much easier to organize what I mean by that is one that makes it much easier to create and modify rules for sorting incoming email. I know outlook does this but it's a pain to make and manage all the necessary rules. another feature I need is a nice clean easy to use layout, and spell checking(spiel chieking )
Plus a way to easily back up my entire mailbox.

Any and all suggestions are appreciated.

I've been using the Thunderbird email client, never had any problems with it. But my needs are fairly simple.

try thunderbird. It will install, import your stuff over from OE, and all you have to do is type and save your passwords. It has good mailrules and spam filtering, and blocks images by default to reduce 'phone home" imbedded code.

Another for thunderbird... great program that also supports plug-ins (like all mozilla apps).

Ditto on the Thunderbird. All I need is a very simple email program, and Tbird is a perfect fit.

For work, I use Thunderbird with the Enigmail plugin. Great if your business is big on PGP.

I moved all of my email to GMail. I think that it is the best email client that I have ever used and it integrates well with Google Calendar.

I also used Outlook and Outlook Express for numerous years. I finally made the move to Thunderbird, primarily for the adaptive junk mail feature, which works fantastic. I doubt I'd ever go back to Outlook again. Thunderbird really is a solid package.

I use outlook thanks to its terrific organization features. Thunderbird doesn't even have a calendar.

This won't be relevant until KDE4 and cross-platform QT; but Kmail/Kontact is a pretty nice email client.

For the moment, I'd replace OE with Thunderbird at the drop of a hat. Outlook proper is a bit trickier, as it is a much larger program, and pretty tightly linked with a lot of corporate systems.

From what I've read It's not really meant to be a replacement for Outlook. It doesn't have the advanced feature set(which I don't use), but it's meant to be competitive with Outlook Express.

And there's no reason why they can't expand it.
