I'm thinking about using my summer holiday to visit the US. I'm thinking about using 1 week in NY + 2 weeks on the west coast.

Plane tickets bought:
CPH -> NY June 30th
NY -> SF July 7th
LAX -> CPH July 22nd

My route planned so far:

https://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=...DCgDHxrYtpV3uodw&oq=yo&mra=ls&via=2,3&t=m&z=7

ATM it's the last four days from the 18th when I leave Visalia to the 22nd were I fly home from LA I need to plan.

Note to self:
Be sure to pack a bullet proof vest.
Do not stand too close to the tracks in the subway.
Stay away from the elementary schools.
Stay away from the movie theaters.
And most of all, carry the contact info of your next of kin.
Kidding? I wish I was....

Sometimes people don't realize the distances involved. Florida is not remotely close to NY or DC.

It's roughly the distance between Copenhagen and Florence, Italy.

I was thinking of taking a plane from the NE part to Florida, skipping N/S Carolina and Georgia, unless there's something I must see in any of those states.

Vacationing in Florida in the summer can be rough. We are talking about the kind of heat and humidity that can keep all but the most fit people inside for most of the day.

Same thing for D.C. Before air conditioning the US Congress took the summer off because it was very difficult to work in the hot humid conditions.

Now Boston, there is a great place to visit in the summer. Even NY is ok weather wise, though it does have times when tourists are unable to spend an entire day sightseeing.

You aren't going to get any meaningful answers until you tell us more about yourself and what you enjoy doing.

The US is a huge place, filled with big cities, small towns, mountains, lakes, rivers, oceans, hundreds of micro-cultures, activities, places to visit, etc. etc.

I live near DC and think it sucks. NYC is insanely better, though I would never want to live there. Florida is awesome anytime other than the Summer.

Honestly, if you're going to visit the states I would hit up NYC then just do the west coast. People are much friendlier and laid back. Additionally, I would say to check out the Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, LA, etc. The west coast has a better mix of natural attractions and metropolitan areas.

Yeah, it's hard to recommend the East coast in the summer...

I live in DC and it's HELL here! The time to visit the east coast is more like April/May or October/November I think.

For the summer months, I would recommend something like:

Depart CPH for YVR (Vancouver, Canada)
Visit Vancouver (and surroundings)
Visit Seattle (and surroundings)
Head east over to Montana (Glacier National Park)
Then back west to HWY 101 via Portland, OR
Take 101 south via Redwood National Park to Napa Valley
Continue south via Berkeley and San Francisco (stop and visit for a while)
Continue south via Santa Cruz, Monterey, Carmel, Santa Barbara to Los Angeles
Do the touristy stuff in LA
End your journey there, departing LAX for CPH

also there's the deadly hantavirus which caused some noise earlier this year.

lol the average belgian or dutch reaches the italian coasts in one stretch with car and trailer.
In 4-5 weeks there's plenty of time.

Make sure you stop by some town not too large so you can get a taste of American hospitality.

Here is a sample Google Maps route based on what I suggested:

Air fare is not too bad. This comes out to about 6.200 DKK or 830 EUR, round-trip.

Skip Boston. Nothing good to see there.
Go to DC.

If you go to Florida, go to Key West. And also Miami if you like the party scene.

Unless you crave the high heat and humidity, see the east in the fall. I you can't get the fall dates, go west.
