I still don't see how anyone can provide you with advice when we have no idea what you like.

Outdoor stuff? Indoor? Cities? Countryside? Hot weather? Cooler weather? Water? Dry places? Touring? Museums? History? National parks? Dining? Hiking? What?

The US is over 200 times larger than Denmark.

DC and NYC are a must. You could probably spend a full week doing stuff in NYC alone.

I'd also suggest Philadelphia. Lot's of cool stuff like the Liberty Bell, National Constitution Center, Independence Hall, etc. You can also get a cheesesteak. I'd be happy to give you some more information on activities and places to to eat; just send me a PM.

That's a long vacation. If you're into driving, it could be enough time for some decent road trippage.

I'd hit up NYC, DC, Vegas, and San Fran. If your into history while your in DC there is a ton of other stuff close by in Virginia and NC. That would get you a pretty broad spectrum of the different cultures around the country.

It all depends on what you like to do. The South in the summer sucks though. Its very hot and very humid.

I live in Boston currently, and if you like history Boston is fun. Also if you like going to tons of different bars and restaurants (though that is pretty much ever city). Boston is a good place to visit.

If you like outdoors stuff and want to stick to the East Coast, try flying into Manchester, NH instead of Boston and do some (light) mountain climbing and hiking in NH or Maine.

If you let me/us know what you like to do, I can suggest destinations in New England (assuming the west coast folks haven't converted you yet).

If you're going to fly around between cities, no reason not to visit the West Coast or parts of Canada.

I haven't found out my budget yet, but after looking at the cost of renting a car It's probably going to a bit shorter holiday, maybe around 3 weeks. So maybe:

~1 week in NY area -> fly to Seattle and rent a car -> drive south to LA/San Diego (with stops during the way) -> Fly home

I went to DC during the summer and HOLY HELL it was hot there. I don't know who the hell would want to live in that kind of heat. It was still around 90 degrees even at 10pm. If I'd visit again, I'm going during spring.

If you are flying out west hit Vegas more then anything if gambling / nightlife is your thing.

Not to mention more shows and events then any other place that you can walk to easily.

Don't forget to stop by Detroit to check out abandon buildings and eat some soul food.

Either do an LA -> Vancouver or Vancouver -> LA trip.

Try to time your stay in Vancouver for the end of July or early August if you can.

LA has the beaches, then you've got San Fran, Yosemite, Napa. You can do a beer festival or two in Portland I'm sure. If you are a mountaineer at all, you can do one of the Cascade volcanoes on a guided tour (Adams is easy, Rainier is more difficult but well worth it).

Then in Vancouver you've got a cool fireworks show and all the natural beauty.

OP, try to avoid the "if it's Tuesday, this must be California" approach. Distances are huge and it's foolish to spend half your time traveling. In retrospect, it might not be a bad idea to confine yourself to a smaller area.

Yeah, I'm not interested in spending all my holiday on the road, that's why I thought Seattle -> LA should be doable in two weeks.

Or maybe just SF -> LA

You still have to answer the question... what exactly do you want to see? People, culture, history, natural landscapes?

If you're going for natural beauty and want to take that route, I would still include glacier but skip the lower half of California.

I've driven up the west coast twice. Honestly I think San Francisco (appx same lattitude as Yosemite) is a nice stopping point. I really did not care for LA at all.

If you haven't seen much desert, Utah is an amazing place with several national parks - the terrain is just not like anything you will find in Europe. It will be extremely hot though...

Road trip from California to New York would be the best way to see the country and get an appreciation for both culture and nature. You won't get a feel for the U.S. unless you've been to both coasts, through the Southwest and Midwest, and the South (at least).

Visit as many national parks as you can along the way.

I'd like to see it all

Just a good combination of city, nature and culture. I want to see and do things I can't find anywhere else.

I'm definitely leaning towards SF -> LA and then see some of the areas around there like Yosemite.
