Well I was trying to figure out the same thing myself. I should be sleeping, since I need to drive to St. Cloud and back twice tomorrow. Not sure if I'm driving new Nissans, or towing them.

I don't think they came to the US until '94 or '95, but VE says he's in Sweeden.

The '92 Golf never came with a VR6. It is a conversion. Depending on the quality of the work will it may or may not be worth the money.

I'm pretty sure that this car ain't no conversion cuz it's an old lady that bought it first. It have run 170000km and that's pretty much but it's my first car and I ain't planning on having it that long.

Asha': Well see... It's not impossible that me and the Mrs come visit you

Ive seen vr6s in 1992s.
They are the only vr6 your going to find in the 5k-6k range.

VE, that's not all that many KM on the car, you could keep it a long time, and it should be able to go almost twice that far, if you take good care of it and fix the piddling stuff that breaks. Some stuff will break, but the engine/drivtrain will be fine. VWs aren't exactly in the same league as the the best Japanese cars (or Volvo, Mercedes, or BMW for that matter) when reliability is concerned.

vr6 motors of that vintage have some serious issues at that milage:

timing chain/guides/headgasket issues.

If the timing guides wear out, snap timing chain, smash to all the valves.

These are NOT cheap repairs, but MUST be done or you'll be a VR0 really quick.

Oh, I didn't know that the VR6 was a troublesome engine. I've seen the 4 cylinders go over 200,000 miles (322,000 KM, if I converted that right) without anything major going wrong in the engine, so I just thought VW probably got the VR6 right as well.

Edit: 170,000 KM ~ 105,000 miles, by my imprecise reckoning.

Not even in Europe.

I know of a VR6 in an 87 Jetta. It is a clean conversion due to the fact that the Corrado uses the same subframe/suspension setup. Unless you get a really crappy shop to do the work the conversion look stock. The only thing that looks a little odd in the conversions is the instrument cluster but even then you have to know exactly what you are looking for. When I was a VW mechanic there was a shop around the corner that did performce work on Vdubs so I have seen plenty of engine swaps of all differet kinds.
