Guess which one is the HD-DVD

Not all that impressive IMHO.

They really should be BMPs or TIFFs. You don't use JPEGs for image quality comparison.

I didn't want to post 10 meg bitmaps.

isn't the real question "when are hd dvd or blu ray burners" and appropriate 'backup' software going to be available?

I don't want my dog to chew my new blu ray discs ya know!!! oh wait... I don't have a dog or a blu ray disc....

I was all set to pull the trigger on one of those Toshy players until I started to look at the movies. I had a list of about 5-6 that I wanted to buy, and when I started looking 3 were available on HD and the other 3 were on blue-ray only.

At that point, I decided it was too early to jump for my tastes. Ill let the format war sort itself out a little better first.

You could get an HDMI Playstaion 3 with 1080P BLU-RAY for the same price.

At this stage of the game, I prefer HD-DVD. Blu-Ray has some issues that need to be resolved before I take another look at it. As of right now, HD-DVD has the slight edge.

Personally I'm waiting for either a dual format player or a clear winner in the format war.

I'm assuming that the dual format players will happen first.

Or people should learn to take better pictures... and use better cameras. That makes more of a difference than JPG/TIFF.

Am I right in saying that these early HD players are basically PC's with special software? I heard that one of them uses a P4?

Wait.

Q2 of '07 you'll dual format players out from LG and Samsung. Possibly some other manufacturers as well. By the end of the year everyone will be making a dual format player. If you wait a bit you can avoid getting "beta'd"

LG would have one out now but they were "asked nicely" by Sony to wait until after the PS3 mania died down. (Those were my LG rep's words... he wouldn't/couldn't explain what "asked nicely" meant)

that comment about getting a PS3 for a blu-ray player was pretty funny - I was drinking my soda and read that comment and blew my soda all over my laptop... So, you are advising people to wait for a $599 piece of equipment that is going to be very hard to find and then use it for your main media player? there is some good advice...
It is pretty cool that I can get a HD-DVD player for my 360 and dont have to keep hitting F5 on a website that may or may not have a PS3 in stock for months because for some reason the blu-ray drives are not ready for primetime.

I'm willing to bet large sums of money that HD-DVD will win the format war.

you do realize that hd-dvd also uses the same laser diode right?

HD-DVD uses a blue laser but the technologies are different. Toshiba has had no problems producing HD-DVD players.
