Just don't, man. If you do, find something specific to do in IT, don't try and take the Help Desk/Tech Support approach; it's an absolute meat grinder, and often isn't a gateway to better things within an IT organization.

Bear in mind that my experience comes solely from large enterprises.

I've been trying to get out of IT for the past year. Don't do it!

It is hard giving up the big pay check to jump into another field. I’ve wanted out of IT for years but finally just gave up and am resigned to being in IT until retirement. With any luck, I’ll be in semi-retirement in 8-10 years.

How does that have anything to do with my overall career? After the feedback from this thread, I am not going to quit my job, but I will be looking into a career change while keeping my job.

You must be incredibly dumb to think those two threads encompass my entirety as a person.

And LOL at taking the time to search through my posts.

Thanks ponyo. That explains it. Another insecure man-child seeking "advice".

When did ATOT become such a haven for these people? Is it something that Purch is doing with SEO? There have always been screwballs in these forums, but now ATOT threads have become nothing but the ramblings of people who should probably be in the care of the government for their own safety.

I’m a man-child, yet you’re spending your free time insulting people who never did anything to you on an internet forum. Oh, the irony.

I'm still relatively entry so I'm perfectly okay if I can find something that pays me the same just so I can get my foot out of the door. Doing a career side step is so hard. People see my current title and they just skip past it. Meanwhile I get hit up for so many IT support jobs. Sure they pay more but where would I be in 2-3 years, unhappy and dreading life again?

I've been reading a forestry forum lately, and kinda wish I got into logging or tree cutting, but I'm too old now. You should get into logging while you're young. Think of all the money you'll save not having a gym membership.
A whole $300 a year OMG I COULD RETIRE ON THAT!!!

Might not be the biggest amount of money, but at least you'd know the effort expended didn't go to nothing. Gyms are about the dumbest things the world. People buy crap to make their lives easier, and then spend money to make them harder again.

You should have zero issue getting into software development. Some of the best engineers I have ever worked with never had a CS degree. A couple off the top of my head were economics, marine biology, art majors etc... All turned out to be top tier engineers. In fact probably the most talented didn't even have a degree, go figure.

My suggestion to you, is get a little bit a knowledge, take a course on Java etc... If your good at your current job, when you interview make sure you establish you were a SME at what you currently do. Most companies if their smart will hire on potential, not a wall of text on a resume.

I think it is always better to regret that you did smth than that you didn't

I've learned you rarely regret doing something new, but always regret not doing something new. Also, you're late to this party

Why is everyone in AnandTECH forum suddenly hatin' on IT?

I've been trying to get DEEPER into IT last 10 years and I've been rewarded pretty well financially... and good hours (including WFH).

Office jobs are office jobs. It won't be all roses and rainbows when you change your industry. As a matter of fact, I can't think of an industry that pays this well when comparing given years of experience.

Because most people hate their job and the grass is always greener on the other side.
