Thinking of upgrading to a opteron 165 - questions

I have the system below in my signature. I am considering upgrading to a dual core opteron. I guess the best value would probably be the 165. My question is that I know there is a good likelyhood that my dual core opteron will not do the 2910mhz of my current opteron 148. If the 165 opteron tops out at 2.6mhz would it still be a decent upgrade for me? I just wonder if I should wait 6 months and then buy an intel based processor, motherboard, and ram.

Few opteron 165 will reach 2.9 or higher. Mine only does about 2.5. The only cases where I noticed a good improvement over my single core A64 was in movie encoding and image editing apps. I mostly use my machine for gaming and there was no improvement in that area, so unless you really need dual cores I would just wait and build a whole new rig with a C2D processor.

I have to disagree. Most (if not all) of the steppings shipping lately have been CCBBE based, and hit around 2.8ghz ON STOCK VOLTAGE. i.e, with the proper cooling+board+memory, they are good for up to around 3ghz. It often takes water to do it but the chips are capable. yes, there are "dud" opteron 165's out there, but even those should still be good for around 2.6ghz. Overall windows experience is much nicer, just with a change to dual core (2.5ghz single core to 2.5ghz dual core, which is where I first booted the opteron at, stock speeds are for pansies lol).

Most opty 165 from the CCBBE stepping can do 3GHz+ on air as long as you have good quality parts.

I am running mine at 2.8GHz (check my sig). I have not tried any higher but it is running at default voltage for about a month now. Both core stable at full load. Temperature around 30C idle and 47C full load with stock cooler.

Great processor!. I have the CCBBE 0616 stepping.

I'll second that, my opty 170 CCBBE does 3.0 on air, with a slight bump in V. 96 hrs. Prime stable.

Thats four posts with great clocks on the latest shipping opty. Your GPU will be the limiting factor period (mine is severely limiting).

I'm torn between getting a C2D or an Opty 165 & a S939 motherboard so I can use my existing hdd's & memory.
I'm verified to purchase the E6300 bundle through Intel, but i'd need new memory, video card & hard drives.
I just don't know if it's worth it to go that route or not.

there is a $50 motherboard that will let you use agp and ddr, and has IDE so you can keep all your hardware, and upgrade later.

dunno if a 9800 Pro is worth keeping...hehehe
Is there somewhere I can go to find the performance difference between a 165 Opty & an E6300 set up similarly?

Maybe here:

The Opty 165 will peform similar to the 3800+ X2 at default clock. The opty 165 overclock at 2.8GHZ will be about the same as the FX-62. As you can see, the 6300 at ~2.6Ghz simply destroyes the FX-62 in most test. Most 6300 do 3.2Ghz +.

If you need CPU power and have the extra money, the 6300 is worth buying.

I mostly play games so the benifit for me isn't that big and I was kind of short on money anyway.

Wow good charts, what those charts really shows is if you have a money in manycases a stock E6600 2.4 will dominate an 2.88 E6400. The 4mb cache really makes a bigger difference that many people have claimed
