Hey Mats & PicPop....what made you decide to buy this notebook. Do you know anyone who has one? I would like to get it but would like to know if you have first or second hand info about this specific unit's reliablity and durablility. Thanks to anyone with any experience with this notebook.

RossMAN,

if you can afford it, I believe you'll be much happier with the Dell. I say this even though I don't own one personally. One of the more important features is the display.. to me, 14" is the sweet-spot for a full-featured notebook (15" just adds size/bulk and most of those ultra-powered notebooks drain far too much power). I bought my dad a basic Toshiba notebook not too long ago that is similar in specs to this IBM.. I have to admit that while it's a good little machine, the 12" display just feels too cramped. So as long as you don't lose your day job, go with the better display... not to mention, the rest of the features comparison is heavily one-sided as well.

Just my two cents.

manly - Very true, I've seen several basic Toshiba/Compaq Celeron laptops at CostCo, Best Buy, etc. all of the 12" displays look so cramped and inadequate.

I love my the 14.1" LCD display on my Dell Inspiron 4000 and while it cost me $1598 it was well worth it plus all the other goodies it came with.

The internal mini 56k/NIC is a work of art!

thursday i recieved my $1200 Vaio XG-38(PIII-700, 128MB RAM, DVD, etc; about $1700 below CompUSA). $900 for this one is still a good deal though.

msarah - Do you have a URL for the Sony VAIO XG-38 where you bought it?

Have you used it yet? What's your opinion of it? What do you like and dislike about it? Impressive specs for only $1200.

This one has a TFT screen, not the cheap HPA. It's not a top of the line notebook, but look at the pricetag guys. And it sells for $1599 at Outpost / $1646.99 at Egghead / $1496.99 at Computers4Sure, etc.
I consider getting it for $900 a hot deal. I bought it for my wife, she's currently using an iBook and now she'll be able to hook up to my monitor, use same programs without the need to buy everything especially for the Mac. Also, whenever something goes wrong, I hate the MacOS.

hey, does anybody know what accessories come with this thing?

like does it have the AC power adapter, battery, maybe a carry case? there arent too many options mentioned..

BTW, you can get cheep so dimm memory to max out this puppy at crucial.com for name brand or pricewatch for CHEEP. just get pc100 cas2

this particular notebook uses the newer celerons that run on 100MHz FSB so you will need pc100 memory (this is a good thing). Also, does anybody know how much it would cost to get a car adapter for this thing?

on a side note, if i get this thing im gonna go ahead and purchase that 3 year warranty. I work at a service technician to apple/gateway/dell notebooks and i tell you what, i hate havign to rape customers to fix a laptop that is just over a year old. minimal price in parts to fix a notebook are gonna run you well over that extra 125 bux. and with that 100 dollar coupon that really makes the warranty only cost 25 bux which is a steal IMO. I had to bill one guy $300 dollars in parts and $100 in labor to fix his 1.2yr old apple laptop and i was generous on labor spent(i spent over 6 hours on it only charged him 2)

so if anybody knows anything about the accessories that come with it let me know. also it would be interesting to find out how much a second battery goes for this machine... any thoughts?

thanks for the hot deal. this really is one! there aren't any new thinkpad's under $1000 nowadays, this has a TFT screen, and that celeron chip is descent. i have been serching around and the only sub $1k notebooks i can find are generic brands with slower cpu's in them. this is especially nice considering it has built in 10/100 ethernet. something you hardly ever find in a low end lappy.

Msarah, why would you tell anyone that you just got a notebook for 1200 if it's not available for purchase? We could all start posting messages of what we have and how much we paid for this - right?

Same with me, shipped out this morning.
BTW, there is the Sony Vaio for $1099 less $200 MR at BestBuy, but I don't like AMD K6 and it's not an instant one - anyway, might be interesting too.

Received it yesterday. Black, stylish, very nice shape and not to thick (comparing style and thinkness to $1000 - $1600 laptops). Brand new with software (Win 98SE and some more), manual, power adaptor and phonecable.
Very sharp TFT display. The downpoints (for me): NiMh battery and no serial out. Otherwise ok, 2 usb, 56k modem, LAN, ext. keyboard/mouse, monitor, etc.
Think that for $900 delivered, it's worth every dollar spent on it. Have in mind this laptop is selling at Computers4Sure, Outpost, Egghead, etc. for around $1500-$1600!

sorry i didnt reply(i dont frequent this forum). i got the laptop thru an auction at haggle.com. i thought the guy was a fraud at first since the bid was so insanely cheap, but i offered to do the transaction thru iescrow.com, he accepted, and i got it with no problems. it seems there are a lot of high-end laptops going very cheap at haggle.com, but most of them seem like frauds, so id be careful. i still recommend the Sony XG series BTW. i recant what i said about poor sound quality: i always used the unit in my lap sitting indian style and i thought the speakers were in front so it wouldnt matter, but it turns out it actually has four speakers(two in the front and two in the back), and i was blocking two with my legs. i dont think ive ever heard of four speakers on a laptop before.

i'm eagerly awaiting mine... does anyone know if there are any replacement/backup lithium ion batteries that would fit in this laptop? i figure this would add battery life and even make it lighter.

msarah, do you mind telling who you bought the laptop from? just so we know a dependable seller to buy from on haggle.com. it seems many people are selling multiple laptops. thanks!

the guy i bought it from.....ha! its a long story: i didnt exactly win an auction from the guy. i noticed he had posted the auction at a starting bid of $750, so i emailed him with an offer of $1200 and he took it(then closed the auction). a few days before i recieved the laptop, i got an email from somebody asking about him(i have no idea how they connected me to him and got my email address; it was from an aol account, so it wasnt the FBI or something). it turns out the guy is wanted for fraud, though he did send me my product exactly as it was described(which is very strange). the other day i noticed his haggle.com account had been suspended. see for yourself:

http://www.haggle.com/cgi/getitem.cgi?id=202512970

anyway, be very careful about anyone selling laptops cheap on haggle.com. it is a free and somewhat unmoderated auction site with absolutely no verification required for selling(unlike yahoo and eb@y who require a credit card to sell). if you do win an auction, use iescrow.com or some other intermediary to pay. if the seller wont do it, then they are a fraud. BTW, this is the second high-end laptop ive gotten extremely cheap from haggle.com, so it definately happens.
