Hi.
Ive just gotten my new laptop through the post, a Thinkpad Z60M.
Im pleased with it apart from a wierd noise it makes.
Whenever im copying stuff across my network, thats above 5Mb in size i get a high pitched, but quiet, sound eminating from the laptop.
It also happens when scrolling up and down, and ive had it happen when a program has locked up on the laptop.
I thought it was the HDD, but running HDTach doesnt make the sound.
Its a similar sound to the one you get on the backlight on a Nintendo DS, but its not a consistant sound as on the DS.

Whats causing it? & should i be worryed about it?

For reference, my father, cant hear a thing, and aparentely he was recently certified at his work for having good hearing. And i do have very sensative hearing, so its possible i could be hearing stuff that 90% of other people cant.

Ideas?

My bro also hears stuff that most people can't, usually in the very high pitched range. He's able to hear TV sets, monitors, and a lot of other electronics. I think the noise is from interference or it may be "blitter noise." It's normal, but if you're really annoyed, I suppose you can contact Lenovo and ask if they can find you a z60m without the noise.

Put your speakers on mute - Button is right above the keyboard and next too the volume up/down buttons. Try the same tasks and see if you hear noise.

Could be electrical noise feeding through the sound circuitry. Maybe not....

It happens wether the speakers are on or not.

So no-one's got a definate idea about wether its a problem with the Thinkpad or not?

I hear that stuff on my brother's G5 setup.
He thought it was a built-in MAC feature, funny enough.

I've always found sounds like that to be from my onboard soundcard, but if you're muting the speakers and still hearing it, I'm at a loss...

Ive done some poking around, and aparentely its a common problem that doesnt have consistant symptons. If that makes sences. Its caused by capacitance leakage on the video chip, because its clocking itself up/down too fast.
Aparentely.

Ive done some testing on my Z60M. And it appears that regardless of power sceme, if the AC adaptor is plugged in, the noise happens with the touchpad. But if its on batterys, regardless of if its on full performance or maximum battery life, it goes away.
Which, to me, would seem to imply that the AC adaptor is the cause of the problem. Its probably either insufficiently sheilded or its picking up interference off one of the many devices on the same ring main that the power adaptor is on.
