Thinkpad quality after IBM sold division?

Hey all:
Any early indications on changes in Thinkpad quality now that the division has been sold?
I'm looking to get a latptop in a couple months, and am thinking Thinkpad, but only because I want a solid laptop I won't have to send back to the factory 3 times for broken screen hinges.

You don't have to worry about changes in the Thinkpads' quality until the next model (after T43) comes out, because that will be the first Lenovo Thinkpad.

T43s and prior are all true-blue IBM Thinkpads.

i am buying another three years of warranty from IBM for my t-30. by then i will know
if i want to buy another IBM. i hope the quality and service stays the same.

i just bought a T42, it was shipped out of Hong Kong last week. i got it on friday.

it's a great laptop, i did notice one thing tho, the screw that holds the lock in place that is used to take the optical drive out is missing.

Its supposed to be missing. -unless you mean it wasn't in the zip lock baggy that came with the ThinkPad.

They ship it in a baggy and you add it to the unit if you want to make your optical non-removeable.... Very popular with K-12 schools.

Here are some basic facts.

1. The aquisition is not final yet. Should be final anywhere between May 1, and June 1, but time will tell.

2. At time of aquisition, Lenovo will aquire 18 months of future product development/roadmap from IBM.

3. Lenovo as part of this deal also got both the ThinkPad and ThinkCentre Design teams.

4. The new company "Lenovo", while not new in China will be new to the rest of the world as they only sold in China before this. The New global company is headed by Steve Ward, general manager of IBM's PC Division. Under him and Lenovo in China, the focus remains on quality, and innovation, something that Lenovo has won awards for in China from Intel.


There is much much more..... There product lines don't overlap, so this won't be anything like the HP/COmpaq merger where both had duplicate product portfolios.

There is much positive about this deal happening. As with anything... time will tell, but based on what I've heard, it's a positive move for the industry and the consumer and busines customers.
