This deal is sweet because you can start at $894 and configure it from there, unlike many of their previous direct deals.

upgrade to Core 2 Duo 2GHz from 1.66GHz - $50
upgrade to 14" SXGA+ - $50
upgrade to X1300 from GMA950 - FREE
upgrade to X1400 from GMA950 - $50
free 512MB memory
upgrade to 1.5GB - $99
upgrade to 80GB 5400RPM disk from 40GB - $50

The 15" SXGA+ IPS FlexView screen is a little more expensive, a $315 upgrade.

For the gamers out there, you can also get a T60p on sale for a little more.

I configured a Core 2 T7200, 14" SXGA+, 1.5GB RAM, 80GB, GMA950, CDRW, XP Pro, 9-cell for $1233. Quite a bargain if you ask me

Yep. I am going to try to convince the wife to snap one up. The machine you configured is equal to or more capable than my T60 which I bought not too long ago on sale for over $2000, with the exception of the hard drive, optical drive, and graphics card. I think I'm going to choose GMA950 on this next one because of the battery-life savings.

this is SUPER HOT. Too bad I don't have $1200 or so to blow on a desired configuration... oh well.

FWIW, the release of the widescreen T Series is going to be any day now, which may be why they're clearing out some of these. Still tempting as hell.

Also, there is 7% "Fat Cash" back at Lenovo through the end of the year.

No. They don't "clear out" anything-- they have a pretty tightly managed pipeline. They build to order. That's why you have to wait an undetermined number of weeks for your laptop to arrive (although it's typically not a huge wait). This is not a clearance sale.

Uhm, you mean the Z-Series which has been out in for over a year now?

Thinkpad lineup --> LINK

Uh, no, I mean a widescreen T Series just like I freaking said. The Z has several design and configuration quirks that turn off people looking for a T level notebook.

It's funny how some people can't understand that companies do make plans to release new products in the future.

Nice find OP... tempted to bite... but I don't really need a new laptop now

 I'm sure they don't wait to pour the plastic into the mold for the chassis until after you've ordered. Yeah, the configs are all different, but the parts are all manufactured and stocked already. I worked in a shipping center in college and you are always trying to keep a balance between future demand and what's on the shelves. Plus, this will keep demand for the widescreen T lower initially so that they aren't wildly backordered as they ramp up production as most fencesitting potential Thinkpad owners should be jumping on this offer.....myself potentially included except that I can't shake the vision of 720P HD content filling the notebook screen.

Okay, looks like you now agree that they're not "clearing out some of these (built T series)" because of the coming of the widescreen T. Now you're saying they're locking in a lot of orders early to build T60 Thinkpads, in order to forestall orders of the widescreen model. They're not clearing out the old model.

Most parts besides the screen, chassis, case, and probably mobo will be shared between T models, as many are shared between the T and Z series (batteries etc.).

Good deal but the requisite upgrades bump the price past $1200 (as fbrdphreak said).

Is it any cheaper through EPP?

None of the upgrades are "requisite". For $894 you can get a perfectly fine T60 laptop. You certainly don't have to spend an extra $300 to get a machine with all the "requisite" parts.

Well duh. What's requisite to you will be different from what's requisite to me or the next person.

Did I miss whether Lenovo is offering a coupon for Vista?

Since my Thinkpad has had issues twice this year (the second of which remains unfixed, as it my fault supposedly and I'm liable for charges), I'm glad that I went for the 3 yr warranty when I bought my ThinkPad 2 yrs ago.

How does this compare with the T42? That's the one I've thought about buying. I saw a deal on it less than a year ago for around $1000, but didn't buy. I'd heard a lot of good things about it. I posted a thread here and nobody replied! So, I guessed it wasn't so hot.

Is this better than the T42? I've yet to buy my first laptop, but had desktops since the 1993.
