It is part of the sale, as is the reduced price on the CPU upgrade and a couple other things.

I figure that when I want to print from the laptop, I can connect it to the network and print from the desktop, as long as it can see documents on the laptop.

To connect the laptop to the network, what will I want to do? Obviously, I can connect the laptop directly to my D-Link router via Cat5 ethernet cable, and that would be the fastest but not always most convenient means.

What would I need to connect the T60 to my other computers wirelessly (I have a second desktop, but rarely use it for other than backup) in order to support T60 internet connectivity, file sharing, backup and laptop mobility?

I'd like to connect a serial device to the T60 (it's not crucial, but it would be nice). I have a cable device which adapts USB --> serial. I used it for an external modem, but got completely tired of the recurrent problems and reverted to my internal PCI hardware modem (sacrificing a slot). Is this USB to serial adaptor apt to work with the T60?

Thanks for replies.
Let me see if this answers your questions. You should be able to set it up that when you connect to your wireless network such that file and printer sharing is enabled. Thus you can browse files on all machines from your laptop and as long as the desktop is running, print through the desktop to the printer from your laptop. Your desktop would act as a print server.

Serial to USB adapters are always iffy, you'll just have to try and see.

If you've been using a much lower physical resolution (larger pixels) it may seem small for about half a day, then you've adjusted completely.

I have a T60 with the 14.1" SXGA+ and wish I didn't. While the extra resolution is occasionally handy for being able to stuff more data on the screen, for me it is just a little too small. Especially if it is late, I've been staring at a computer for a long time, I will often bump the resolution up (which is tolerable but of course not great) just to take it a little easier on my eyes. I wish I had gone for 14" SXGA or preferably the 15" display on it. I went with the 14 + because I mistakenly thought that it was also an IPS screen, which it is not.

Now, keep in mind that my "normal" screen is a dell 24" 1920x1200.

4. Any take on this option: Intel PRO/Wireless 3945 a/b/g LAN or ThinkPad a/b/g wireless LAN. Which? Intel card is better on battery life, ThinkPad card is better on range/throughput. Really though performance is more determined by your access point as both cards are pretty good. IIRC, the Intel card has Linux drivers if that matters to you. Altho I think Lenovo might have Linux drivers as well for the ThinkPad card.

I assume by integrated graphics you mean the GMA950 default?

Do I need to put PCI cards in my desktops to support the wireless network? If so, can I get cards that support both wireless and ethernet in one card (I am already using all my slots in my everyday machine). I have DSL and am running Windows 2000 on my desktops. TIA.

Correct. No serial, parallel, or S-Video output.

Go on eBay and buy a 10 mbps or 10/100 mbps JetDirect card for $10-$20 shipped. The J2550 or J2556 should work but a lot of other ones will too. All you do is slide it into the printer and then connect it to the network.

I assumed you had a wireless network. Do you just have a regular ethernet router? Anything special about it? Most wireless routers have all the functionality of a wired router, with wireless radio built in. I would just get a wireless router and replace your wired one.

As someone else suggested, if you have a higher-end HP printer you can add a dedicated JetDirect card which will make your printer network capable. Then you just setup the printer on each machine as a network printer and as long as the computers are connected to that network, they'll print to it just fine.

Thanks. Yes, I figure a wireless router will do the trick. I gather that they generally support ethernet too, so yeah, I'll just replace my ethernet router. The only thing special about it is support for setting up a printer on the network. But it turned out it doesn't support my HP4M printer, so it's just a regular ethernet router as far as I'm concerned (D-Link Dl-704P).

I'll probably get that Jetdirect card that cmv recommended, and off ebay as suggested.

I have a couple more questions:

1. The site doesn't make it clear, but I infer that one AC adaptor comes standard with the T60.

2. The optional additional AC adaptors - there appear to be two of them, one for $53 that's something like 90 watts and the other around $34 that's about 60 watts. How is it that they offer two with different power ratings? Or did I misunderstand?

Oh, and another one: If you are getting that 7% Fat Cash discount, aren't you supposed to know before you enter your payment information? I had no indication that I was getting the discount, so I canceled the transaction last night. I figure I'll give it another try tomorrow and see what happens. Thanks for the information.

Although unless you get a T60p with V5250 graphics, that may not be the case anymore. The 65W model is a bit smaller, and has been recently designed with a standard 2-prong power plug instead of the grounded 3-prong. This is nice so you don't have to have a 3-prong outlet (really only an issue in older buildings) and 'cuz the cord isn't as thick. Only downside is of course the 65W charges slower, but IMO not detrimentally slow.

If for some reason they send you one of the older 65W's with the 3-prong grounded plug, I would ask them to send you the newer one. The newer ones say Lenovo on them, whereas the older ones with 3-prong say ThinkPad.

It's not up TOO much, I configured same as above for $1347. Frankly, the new website is worth the extra price, LOL. MUCH better

And you can get same warranty configs, it is on the second page of the config.

P.S. You can always call in and talk to a sales rep to see about maybe matching the pricing you saw a day or two ago, I've heard a lot of people have success with working w/sales reps.

Yep, it's up $114 from where it was yesterday. The base price has gone up and I believe the integrated fingerprint reader, which used to be standard is now a small additional charge. Guess my first laptop is going to have to be some other time.

Thanks. I'll give that a try tomorrow.

Edit: The Fat Cash 7% discount thing seems like a mirage (I know, it's not, but it seems like it).

I was already registered at Fat Wallet. On Friday, I configured my T60 (XP Pro, 60 GB HD, 1.5 GB RAM, 14.1" SXGA+, all else default) and tried to buy it through Fat Wallet to get the discount. I created an account at Lenovo too, complete with password. Also, I saved my cart. Today, Lenovo doesn't show me as having an account, and of course I can't find my cart either. I'll call and talk to a sales rep tomorrow and see if I can get that deal.

Call back and talk to other sales rep's. Or tell them something like "Darn, well, I only have $X in my budget for this and just can't buy that. Wish we could do something about it..."

This isn't Lenovo specific - all of these phone sales reps are on commission and have the power to take discounts off.

I hadn't seen your post then, but that's what I did. First I went to Fatwallet Forums and read the thread about the Lenovo holiday sale and I saw a lot of other people had the same complaints: The sale was supposed to be until 12/11, but they suddenly changed the prices. Also a bunch of people complained that they set up a Lenovo account but the information was lost. So, I called Lenovo again and got a different sales rep. This guy was sympathetic and helpful, whereas the other guy just said there was nothing he could do. He said he'd talk to a supervisor and put me on hold. When he came back he said he'd adjust things for me. He even said I could order online and thus be eligible for the Fatcash 7% discount. He knew about it, but the other guy had never heard of Fatwallet or Fat Cash. He said that after ordering I should call him up, go right to his extension and he would fix things. I'm going to work up the order right now. Hopefully, the Fatwallet discount will pan out. It's really impossible to tell, AFAIK, if that discount is working. Logging in at Fatcash.com, when I go to the store page and then Lenovo, I get asked to sign up for a $5 reward and it insists I log in again. Then nothing happens - it keeps wanting me to login. It's nuts. I found a way around that but don't really know if it's working right. Fatwallet is kind of nuts.

I'm wondering something. I was going to just order the same system I thought I put in a saved cart Friday night. That included 1.5 GB memory. Right now, as before, that's a $99 upgrade. However, also right now you can get 1.0 GB RAM as two DIMMs for no extra cost. At present, my thinking is just to order the same system as the other day and I think my rep will give me Friday's price and that will be it. But if it doesn't work out that way, I may opt for the 1.0 GB RAM and save some money. Thing is, I have the GMA950, which uses some of the system RAM, so available RAM for the OS is less than 800 MB, and that might not be too good for Vista, or so I'm told.

Edit: Fatwallet's FAQ says to login at Fatwallet, go to the Stores page and follow the links to the sales. It says to do it without waiting too much, doing any searches, etc. to make sure your discount will register. When I open a new browser and go to Fatwallet, it shows that I'm logged in (i.e. there's a link to "Log out" so I presume I'm logged in!). I just have to assume I'm logged in and go to Lenovo and order....

Does anyone know if it will be possible to get an after market AC adaptor for the T60? I'm thinking I may want to get a second one later. TIA.

Edit: I just finished my order online.

Don't get an aftermarket one - Lenovo's adapters are specifically designed to work with the specially designed charging circuits in ThinkPads. A new adapter through Lenovo is like ~$30-40; don't skimp, get the right stuff.

Get the 1.5GB for $99 if they still offer it. RAM prices are high right now and a 1GB stick alone runs over $100; that is a good deal.

They should be able to add it on still no problem. I think they are shipping 65W adapters by default with systems now; which is fine, they are smaller and just charge a little slower. You can order a 90W adapter if you like for faster charging (slightly larger) or just get another 65W, which is cheaper.

I'll go for the smaller one. They were $33 Friday but $39 today. Or am I dreaming? I guess since I'm not sure I'll just accept the $39 charge (assuming he lets me alter the order).

Does anyone know when I can expect a charge to be made against my credit card? When they ship?
