Third-party firmware for soho routers

Hello.

I have two routers here (D-Link WBR-2310 and Netgear WGR-614 v7), and I'd like to configure at least one of them as a wireless repeater. You'll notice both of these aren't compatible with DD-WRT. Does anyone know of any third party router firmware which allows me to accomplish this and is compatible with at least one of the two extra routers I have.

Also, I don't know if "repeater" is the correct word in this case, but it would also be really cool to have it set up like universities and similar large area wireless networks where all portions of the network have the same SSID. I don't know how that's accomplished or if it's possible with this grade of hardware, but it would be a huge plus if the firmware you recommend can do this. This is not a top priority.

That's done by hard wiring each AP and using the same security settings on them all. As long as you do that you should be good to go.

You don't need compatible firmware, that's what I'm trying to say. Just run both APs, no matter what the manufacturer or firmware, with the same SSID and security settings.

They're just access points. As the client moves from one AP to the next it (which will only happen if you move) will go thru associating with that AP and it's security credentials, you'll go thru the same association request/DHCP, and then you'll be fine.

If you're looking at roaming between access points without going thru the authentication process as you move then you're not going to get it with SOHO gear. You're making it much more difficult than it needs to be.

@spidey - this isn't a high priority or mission-critical thing and if I wanted to run cables, I would just run cables to the two or three machines the wireless network is serving.

@Jack - thanks for your input.

Looks like everybody was confused. What you're wanting is a wireless bridge. SOHO routers don't do that very well, you will get very poor reception. The configuration that you are seeing universities/corporations use are access points that are wired back to a wiring closet to switches. You could run a single cable to a LAN port (NOT WAN port) of one router at the far end of where you want to give access to and turn off all of it's DHCP and gateway settings, then, enable it's wireless using the same SSID and security settings as your other router and have it will work like spidey said.
