At 1005 GMT on Thursday, 05 December 2002, a third probable prime was reported to our server! We have confirmed that 44131*2^995972+1 is prime!! This is unbelievable. The test has actually been assigned since mid-day Moday but was not immediately finished because the user's computer wasn't running tests 24/7. So if you've been thinking that you can't find a prime without multiple computers that are always on, this just goes to show you obviously can. We haven't heard back from the lucky user yet. So check your email, it could be you!
For more info go to the project home page.

I wonder if this project can continue finding primes at this rate. Hope to see more interest in this project on this team. We need to move up some more in the stats.

at this rate it will eleven or bust by new year's!!!

whoa, more news

Due to the increased public interest in the project, it has become necessary to rewrite the stats and SB server from scratch to be more efficient. The new stats engine is going to floor you. It's that sweet.

i might have to increase my boxen on SOB, hmmm....

Yeah, same thought here!

I do kinda hope this project does take a little longer to finish, we seem to be going through these Primes pretty quickly at the moment! :Q

The latest Discover magazine mentioned the search for prime numbers as one of the top 100 science news items of 2002. But they also said it is a, basically, double-edged sword as it makes it easier to decrypt certain things that rely upon the difficulty of factoring into primes.

incredible. I guess this is a more efficient way to crack encryption than distributed.net was and is How many primes would have been found if the dnet computing power was assigned to SOB? I think it would be -T(wohundred)OB Incredible! Oh, and I think its a good time to think of better encryption algorithms
