After some rangling, it looks like it's going to happen.

Each candidate will get two minutes to speak with the other candidate's mic turned off, at the beginning of each 15 minute segment.

My feeling about this kind of restriction is that it helps Trump not do what he is always inclined to do. So it probably helps Trump by curbing his worst impulses which got such a negative reaction in the first debate.

Trump lost the argument over trying to steer the debate questions away from coronavirus. To be honest, I'd rather most of the debate focus on foreign policy anyway. This is a weak point for Trump versus Biden, who has extensive experience in foreign affairs and Trump has been embarrassing the country with his clown antics on the international stage. So I'm more than fine with the debate focusing mainly on foreign policy. The COVID argument has been made ad nauseam anyway and people are well saturated with it.

When Trump brings up Hunter Joe should remind people Trump paid more money to shut up Stormy then he paid in taxes.

Followed by, "Did you deduct the payment off your taxes?" "If you did the people want their money back"

Come on Joe, go there and shut that clown up.

The only thing Trump has going for him right now is the perception he's good for the economy. Biden needs to hammer home that out deficit to GDP is astronomical. He needs to show that stock market is not the economy. Next, he needs to point out gross mismanagement of money both while he's been president and for his private businesses (not fit to manage the country's money. Lastly, he needs to point out that all his policies have been for self-enrichment and that Trump only cares about his own pocketbook.

Any time "law and order" is brought up Biden has an easy out. He can point to how much less unrest there was before Trump took over than now. "We didn't have 6 months of rioting when I was vice president". And "all of this civil unrest happened under your watch, not mine."

Sound bytes and dismissals are the key here.

Being not allowed to talk is probably the most infuriating thing I can think of for Trump. Odds are he's going to find some way to misbehave.

Biden shoudl focus on the fact that trump doesn't have an actual plan for any of his taking points.
Good call. "So Mr President, 4 years ago you said you'd repeal and replace the ACA. Here we are and you don't even have a plan." Then back the camera for a one one one conversation with America. Biden is good when talking to America.

I fully expect Trump to try to turn the conversation to Hunter pretty much no matter what the question is. If Biden is smart, this should be disastrous for Trump. If he gets flustered, things could get ugly.

Yup. When you tell little Johnny to stop pulling his sister's hair, that's when he starts torturing the family cat instead.

Just so I understand the mics are going to be objectively off/on right? There's no on/off by the moderator - just the "system" will turn it off when the clock hits 2mins?

I hope they have a question on water conservation. The entire nation deservers to hear about having to flush the triolet 10 times.

Not too sure how the whole mute thing is supposed to work, it's not like they'll be standing there in individual cones of silence. If Trump wants to interrupt, he'll just yell while Joe is talking and it will get picked up by both Joe's mic and the moderator's. It's not like Trump quietly interjected "ahem, excuse me" 73 times during the last debate.

Wouldn't be surprised if he walks over and stands at Biden's mic spewing his nonsense. Trump's strategy with being a lying degenerate is to try and interrupt, or yell over the truth when it's being stated.

There are six 15 minute segments. In each of those segments they are giving each candidate 2 minutes to speak without interruption. The rest is open and moderated. There will be 12 minutes out of the entire 90 minute debate where Trump can't talk. No wonder he is throwing a fit...

I hope he does that. He cam off bad during the last debate. Him doing that would make him look even worse.

I predict that Donald Trump will go big, crazy big by doing what AG Bill Barr won't do, by announcing during the debate an investigation of Joe Biden. Trump will claim having proof of some ridiculous evidence proving Joe Biden's criminality. Trump could actually call for security to come up on stage and arrest Joe Biden live on the air. But whatever the stunt, Trump must pull some stunt and that stunt will need to be really really big to get the attention and the distraction Donald Trump needs to win.

Yeah this is what doesn't make any sense to me. They are like 10 feet apart. Him yelling with the mic turned off will be just as distracting for Biden as it was in the first debate. And everyone else in the venue will also hear him.

That said, it's going to make for great entertainment!

No it won't. I turned on and off the debate multiple times because I won't tolerate people talking over each other.

I just looked through Page 1 of P&N for a thread on this. If it weren't here I was going to start a thread, titled:

Man with soul debates man with no soul tonight

Song about the guy who's pissed they can turn off his microphone:

Biden really does understand loyalty and family and he won't like Trump hammering on his son. I expect something on this tonight, hopefully stinging Trump enough where it doesn't drag on or repeat, but with Trump, the spoiled bully, who doesn't learn from his mistakes short term or long term, it may be ugly indeed. Still, Biden won't melt down.

I expect this to get less traction, less viewers than last time, but not particularly more civil and less disgusting and sway few voters.
