They had this on fark the other day.

It was at this link, http://www.3rdworldfarmer.com/, and it appeared to be an updated or atleast better looking version.

Right now that other link appears to be dead though.

From when I played it I found that cotton was king, as I didnt see any sort of cotton failure.

That being said yeah If I could throw down a couple hundred dollars for farm tools and buildings I would definately throw down atleast $100 for an AK and some ammo to protect myself.

[edit]Just played this version seems to be a bit harder than the other one and has lower prices.[/edit]

The third time I played, I made $278 by the 4th turn and immediately afterwards they put in an event to make me lose everything.

This game doesn't seem very realistic at all. Sure it's hard to make good money farming in the third world but you aren't essentially killed off once you do start making money.

This is VERY realistic. This is the situation in Eastern African countries like rural Ethiopia and Somalia where they are now figting over water. And they have had a drought for 2 years. On the Somalian/Ethiopian border it is VERY real to have your cattle stolen or family members killed by cattle raiders. Also 100.oo us is the average annual wage for these farmers. Anything below 400.oo per year is extreme poverty - a # set by the US. I have relitives that live like this....its not too funny.

Realistic my ass.
Its about as "realistic" as Star Trek.

What is the purpose of the buildings?
I have a well yet my crops get destroyed by dry season.

Isnt it: "Turn swords into plows", yet the tractor will immeadiately spawn civil war

to bad that a drop in market prices will also wipe out my house, tool, and savings

hey by keeping a low profile I managed to farm for 32 years so guess I reached average 3rd world life expectancy
hooray - I should quit engineering and get busy farming

So you're telling me that every time you invest too much into one crop, it's automatically going to have horrible yeilds and one of your family members dies from starvation? That's realistic? Any time you get over $100 dollars the banking system collapses or guerillas come and take everything from you. I could see the latter happening if you accumulate too much money but the banking system isn't going to automatically collapse if you have too much.

It's obvious this isn't that realistic. If it was, the growth rate in African countries wouldn't be so high because everyone would be dead by age 20. The life expectancy in most African countries is at least twice that (AIDS plays a huge part in lowering the life expectancy).

I'm not saying the situtation is all rosy in third world countries but that game is a clear exaggeration.

who are you? Where are you from?
just one small bbc story

""Moyale is a small community in the Borena region of Ethiopia next to the Kenyan border. It is at the heart of a food crisis that has left at least 11m across the Horn of Africa needing aid.

More than one in three people in this barren area - known as the triangle of conflict because of its proximity to the Kenyan and Somali borders - need food aid. Many have lost their cattle, the only wealth they had.

Russell charted the day in the village, as well as asking residents how sustainable their lifestyles are and what their futures might hold. ""

of course its an exaggeration. But as far as the raids, the droughts and the disease, this is very much a part of rural east africa. THis stuff happens ALL the time.

QFT...

Using the above strategy I am currently on round 127 and have gotten too bored to continue... I was hoping I was going to die of old age or have a grandchild or something.

I lost one person trying to find the 'sweet spot' which for me was:

$35-45 in cash
one shovel
one chicken
one pig

I must have gone atleast 45 rounds (not consecutive) where I didn't plant a single crop.

When I did plant crops, I never planted more than 1 of each type of crop.

On the flip side, the most riches I gained was about:

~$100 in cash plus
one well
one barn ($80 building)
one shovel
one sickle
one ox powered thingy (forget what they are called)
one elephant
one cow
one pig
one chicken

The next harvest (which was 3 units of each crop) I was raid for my 'relative success of a farmer) and died shortly after. That game lasted about 13 rounds.

I was able to get to almost $300 as quickly as round 6, but I've now realized that the game will f-ck you if you make >$500.

It's kinda irritating, since there is no option to buy my own militia.
