I was going to get the sony at one point, but i ended up getting THIS instead. It pretty much does the same thing the sony one does, but has a lot more features such as
1.) comes with 2 headphones
2.) 8 minute mp3 skip protection
3.) upgradable firmware (just burn the new firmware to CD, push the play button, and its updated with the newest features)
4.) comes with a remote
5.) backlit display that shows current folder and current artist/title
6.) comes with rechargable batteries and with AC adapter that can be charged right in the player
7.) built in FM radio!
8.) supports playlist files!

considering that its the same price as the sony player, i found these great features to really sell it to me. Oh yeah, i'm loving it so far.
I purchased it from here , although they are currently out of stock (these things are popular)

<< 2.) 8 minute mp3 skip protection >>

Why would you need this? Almost all songs are less than 5 minutes long.

I don't see the point of having the tuner on there since I'm a cd/mp3 buff anyhow, but I would recommend the RIO simply cause they've been around in the MP3 market longer. Sony is definitely a quality product and the price is right. So this is a great deal. As far as hot....we'd have to price-compare.

considering the rio is a mp3 cd player and mp3 cds are not sold i dont think this would be on the market if it didnt read cdr's.

So you're telling me that there's a CD/MP3 player that doesn't support CD-r/rw? Ummmmmmmm.....
How else are you going to play MP3's on it?????? Last time I was in Best Buy I didn't see any MP3 CDs for sale

EDIT: Well Luden, looks like you're a faster typer than me.. lol

I've had the Rio Volt SP250 for over a month now. I absollutely love it. The FM tuner comes in handy when you feel like listening to the radio. The skip protection works really well, especially when using it while I'm running. It also comes with a nice protective case. The sound quality is terrific. I would definately recommend the Rio Volt to anyone thinking about getting a portable mp3 player.

People can be so dense sometimes...

There IS a difference between a cdr and a cdrw.

He claims that the rio doesn't support cdrw's. Alot of drives don't support cdrw's but DO support cdr's.

CDR- One time burn only

CDRW - Multiple burns

Got it? Good.

Yes, people can be dense. Especially when they have no idea what they're talking about

I own the SP100 and SP250, and love them both. I don't use the tuner often, but both units play CD-R and CD-RW without a hitch -- including the 8x discs I burn at 24x all the time and the several hundred rewrites on some of my older CD-RW discs.

Djmcam... one should always double-check their statements when they call others dense. For one thing, if you read his post he mentions CDR/RW... and if you had clicked on the link to the Rio posted earlier in the thread, you would have seen that it SPECIFICALLY mentions it supports CD-R AND CD-RW. So thanks, but no thanks, for your lesson.

maybe i misunderstood his coment but i understood cdr/rw as both cdr and cdrw...

Heres a better image of the player Text, it looks like in this picture the top sides of the player are a clear plastic.

according to this very short review this player will have no firmware updates.

edit: bagger wins round 2.

i meant "back up" cds. there is a difference between copying the whole cd or track and converting them to mp3s.

Bagger - Did I ever say that the rio didn't support cd-rw's? No, I said, "He claims that the rio doesn't support cdrw's."

I was just trying to point out that there is a difference between the cdrs and the cdrw's because some people were saying "if it can't play cd/rw's then how is it an mp3/cd player.

I didn't mean to offend anybody.

i meant making a exact copy of a cd. there is a difference between copy the tracks/whole of a cd and encoding a cd into mp3 format.

i have a pine mp3player that wont play "backup" cds but will handle mp3 cds.

ok my bad, i did not scroll down far enough to see Plays standard audio CDs, plus the CD-R and CD-RW discs you've created on your CD burner on the rio.

Hmm, the Sony looks like a hubcap off a 60's Monte Carlo
Don't get me wrong, I kinda like it

I'm far from a Sony supporter, their home equipment isn't allowed in my door...nice interfaces, falls apart too fast from my experience (don't bother commenting on my experience, which is what the remark is based on), but their portable stuff has done ok for me.

Thanks for pointing it out MSAgent, for those who want a Sony player it's the deal of the moment.

BTW, some of us listen to tracks much longer than 5 minutes, timeshifted radio shows, old time radio dramas, audio books, that sort of thing. Still, not sure why you'd need 8 minutes of skip protection, seems like if the player can't read a disc in that amount of time you're better off buying new shocks for the car or changing your jogging style than relying on a huge buffer.

Anyone know if the rio will support 320 kbps mp3s? Didn't see it mentioned anywhere in the specs.
I have an MP3 CD I purchased from Rob Tognoni's website and it is burned at 320 kbps. Sounds awesome through klipsch pro media..but wontplay on my Memorex portable...had to convert it to 128 Kbps.
