You should check into the 800.Com discounts by purchasing through MSN Passport. The price would be less for this player.

Bought one from 800.com w/ MSN deal, $149.95 free shipping - $20 MSN rebate = $129.95 shipped

The unit is considerably sturdier, smaller and thinner than the Rio Volt (I have the PSX100), sound quality is excellent. Includes headphones, AC adapter & nylon strap. Although the unit doesn't come with a remote control unit, there is provision on the headphone Jack to plug in a Sony Discman/MD remote control (the rectangular plug w/ 8 pins). I hooked up my Minidisc remote and it works fine with the CD player.

I've been pondering on the choice of my mp3 player for a while now... and here's what i came up with...

Rio Volt SP250 - Has all the right features, but kinda bulky compared the to sony one or the iriver... around $150...

Sony one - Good design, good battery life, but NO remote, no FM tuner. around 150. but pretty.

Creative Jukebox - Good storage, Remote, but LITTLE battery life(essential). around $160

Iriver 350 - Awesome design, no need for LCD display on the unit, cuz of the remote LCD, good battery life... might be expensive... around $200 or so... Had multi language display which i like, personally.

I was looking at riovolt250 or the sony one, but my ultimate choice would be the iriver. I think it has all the things i'm looking for even though it might mean i have to shell out the extra $50 or so...

Was looking around on Amazon's website and they have a link for a rebate for the Rio SP250. Looking at the rebate, it doesn't show that it is only applicable to being purchased on Amazon's website. It's for $20. I saw Buy.com has it for like $152, plus free shipping. But like I said, not really sure if rebate applies if it is not bought from Amazon.

DjBaMBaM, be fair, now. It's not a POS, but a good MP3 player, granted, very basic, but not being an audiofile I can't hear much difference in audio quality between that one and my Rio 100 which I love immensly for all its features.

My Rio, BTW, is made in China, too. LOL

I am interested in buying a mp3 player
What is so great about firmware upgrades?
Does it really matter?
Also does any one know how they all compare in sound quality? They should be about the same but i don't really know

Right now, I am leaning towards the sony right now cause it looks good and is slim. I don't think I need a "remote" and why do you need a tuner when you have 150 of your favorite songs on your mp3 player.

I would buy and Ipod in a second if worked with pcs. Looks great!!! 5 gigs of storage!!! As small as a media card mp3 player!!! Can't get much better than this. Cost doesn't matter to me especially if i am getting a 5 gigs of portable mp3's.

The things I've heard about the Sony mp3/cd player is that it has "way" better anti-skip protection than the Rio/Imps, including the 250.

And for the questions:
What is so great about firmware upgrades?
Does it really matter?
Also does any one know how they all compare in sound quality? They should be about the same but i don't really know

Having a firmware upgrade option is nice because the company can release firmwares for more support, bug fixes etc. Like for the Rio Volt 100's, they added a lot of new features with the new firmware. For the Nomad 2 MG's, the new firmware gave 128 mb smart media card support, etc, etc.

Though it doesn't really matter, it's a nice feature. It gives the end user "expandibility."

Sound quality wise, I think they're all the same, though I've heard the Sony one is a "little" bit better. But don't know about that.

On a personal note, I was actually thinking about getting a Iriver Slim-X but decided to get a Nomad 2 MG. Even with the mp3s you have on there, it's sometimes nice to listen to the radio for whatever reason, weather, news, sports, etc. I also like the built in mic, great for recording lectures.

<< People can be so dense sometimes...

There IS a difference between a cdr and a cdrw.

He claims that the rio doesn't support cdrw's. Alot of drives don't support cdrw's but DO support cdr's.

CDR- One time burn only

CDRW - Multiple burns

Got it? Good.

What you point foolio? He said:

rio has a tuner but no cdr/rw support

I don't know about the lowest model, but the top two models of the Rio do support CDRW. Can tell you from personal experience.

We will soon be blessed with the awesome powers of a less than 0.5'' mp3 cd player w00t w00t!

I'm not sure this is Sony's FIRST CD/MP3 player. I saw a Sony boombox with MP3 capability at Fry's for about $159 a couple of months ago. It sounded great, but was a little pricey for my tastes.
I've been looking for a decent MP3 boombox for use next to my bed for some time, but all the more reasonable units (<$100, Phillips, Koss) don't have head phone jacks, which is essential as far as I'm concerned.
Right now I'm using my cheapo $70 Classic portable CD/MP3 player next to the bed with some cheapo (free after $9 MIR) Cyber Acoustic speakers. It works OK. I can listen to one CD at low volume all night long.

My Sony player arrived via FedEx today. I ordered it late on Sunday evening and, sure enough, Sony delivered as promised.

Some points to make:

-> Pretty small - much smaller than the Memorex MP3 player and MPTrip players (both of which I returned).
-> Skip proof: I've been shaking this player and sure enough, no skipping.
-> 24 hour battery life for MP3 playing. The disc only spins up periodically to fill up the buffer.
-> Sony gives free overnight shipping until 12/31/2001.
-> Sony also gives you a free vinyl carrying case when you purchase it from their on-line store.
-> Taxes: Sony charged me sales tax ($6.75).
-> Sound: I only have 128 kb/sec. MP3s. I didn't even bother to connect the included headphones, but started right off with my Radio Shack Pro 35 headphones. Wow! The sound is incredible!

i had the original rio. battery life was like 10 hours, its super bulky and it skips like crap. my friend has the sony and well, its pretty hard to make it skip at all. not to mention its way cooler looking. personally i just went and bought an MD player. i didnt know the sony could take the remotes, they are like $30 on ebay or $60 at minidisco.com. so $180 with a backlit remote is not bad.

okay----- now, we've heard all about both of these in terms of reviews and comparisions....

NOW---does anyone have the BEST DEALS available on each of these?? specifically, i'm lookiong for the BEST DEAL on the SONY player (i am just biased towards sony making the best products in anything audio related)

is the 800.com deal through MSN still valid and is that the lowest price available for this SONY player???
