I read a short amount of comments to get a feel for the article it links to, but I tire of them quickly. I primarily use reddit as a news source. I haven't logged in in months since they started tracking users more closely.

Whoa!

Link?

I never could get into reddit, the interface is not intuitive at all or flow well and just frustrates me. Though perhaps I've just been doing it wrong.
The problem I have with Reddit is that it's either too busy or too slow. The popular sub reddits basically are live discussions that die within hours. The slower sub reddits usually have nothing going on. You can't really have on going discussions. The voting is also just too easily abused no matter how much they say not to downvote people you disagree with.

I'm using Reddit a lot, like the massively varied content. I click on "random" once in a while and get my mind blown.

These forums do seem pretty slow.

The forums have certainly lost their edge. I think the biggest issue is the main site's content has less interested parties resulting in less new members here. This has led to less activity then causing more long term people to depart.

Reddit is great for ongoing daily shit and you get intelligent and comedic responses. I really don't understand why Twitter is so popular. There are almost zero intelligent conversations or responses. It's just like a thought dump of the masses in reaction to celebrities. Forums are slowing everywhere due to the countless other ways to communicate about topics. This one in particular. A techy forum with terrible tech. I checked out about 2 years ago.

I disagree as to the extent of the effect of social media. Other forums I am a part of are thriving as AT gradually dies. But then those other forums don't lifetime ban many of their most prolific and popular users. Users generate the content on forums, and by getting rid of them, you're gradually causing the forums to die off. I'd say more, but then I'll get banned again under the much abused "mod callout" rule.

I'll say this though: I've never seen mods on other sites generate so much hate that users went out and created their own forums. And AT users went out and created three other forums by my last count.

I learned early on that the guys from Purch do not give a s--t about improving these forums. They'll just ride it into the toilet and blame something else, like the rise of social media or something.

We have told you multiple times where to go if you want to complain about the moderation.
It is not here.

Lulz forum moderation is definitely part of the decline. Any old timer knows this.

I'm sure there's at least twenty legitimate reasons, but the mass-banning of half of the most active forum members two years ago (or has it been longer now?) certainly helped us along in this direction.

Which half? The upper or the lower torso? Show us on this doll. It will help with the healing.

Haha @ mod edit.

Wasn't that followed by them rescinding most of the bans as well as most permabans? And then that just devolved into a bunch of high school level clique-fighting. And then we got another round of "trolls" but they're just sad. At least in the past they'd provide some entertainment, these post the most inane boring threads.

I think there are 3 main reasons. The subforums definitely contributed. But even the tech side has languished, and that is largely because of what happened with the video forum as that really hurt AT forum rep. And then with the site losing Anand and frankly languishing the past few months.

So wtf happened? What forums did everyone go to? I'm starting to get bored when I have down time at work thanks to you all not keeping me entertained.

several months ago i started having browser issues here, not that i was posting much, or reading much, but i visited until i had to clear my cookies/cache or some such every time i wanted to check in.

someone finally got me to look at reddit and i got stuck there. /r/talesfromtechsupport did me in, and i got sucked into some other IT forums and do a little general browsing. its so spread out that i kinda just check a few reddits and hit the main page to see whats up.

Sorry for not posting more. I check for notifications every day. Unless someone posts in my threads, I don't really check much.

Life gets busy sometimes.

The technical forums here are slow sure just like the newsgroups, the original forums . Look for alt.comp.asus. Commodities are the nature of computers now.
Lots of computer sales are mobile devices / notebooks where the owner has no inclination to repair/upgrade themselves. Second the income of many onliners is so low they cannot afford a room large enough for a desktop computer and so use the cell instead which now have larger screens to help this crowd survive online. And mostly the larger cell phone is convenient for many low end online purposes like social media. There are other reasons that desktops are less popular but in the end fewer people need technical help. Which results in less curiosity about OT and the other social fora here and elsewhere.
I find the technical members here to be very knowledgeable and OT members to be wise and humourous . With some squirrly exceptions (JK).

I agree with this except that I don't believe less people need technical help. I think it is that technical help is more easily available online outside of forums, such as ifixit and other how-tos you can find with a simple Google search. There was a time when, if the answer to your problem wasn't on the manufacturer's website (if they had one), the only place to go was a forum.

I also think that, as to OT in particular, social networks, like Facebook and Twitter, provide for people what forums use to. I know, as for me, I post things on FB that I probably use to post in OT, but now I can post them to people I know (I know all my FB friends IRL) vs. strangers online.

There are forums which cater to almost every product and problem, so a general forum like this has less appeal for new users. All we seem to be getting these days are new accounts just to post in P&N, which either means they're alternate accounts or spammers. Fortunately AT still puts out good articles, so there's always hope of a resurgence of new members.
