My buddy has a Packard Bell system. The hard drive crashed and instead of installing 95 which was on it, I installed 98SE. Now I cannot change from 16 colors to 256. He was able to use 256 w/ OS 95. I tried a number of different drivers but they all reverted back to 16bit. The system is the PB s618 and the monitor is a PB 5480. Probably no one can help here, but does anyone atleast know a site that supports US version PB's?

what kind of video card is it? if it's not integrated, you should be able to find the drivers online... i usually find old drivers on cnet.com. if it is integrated, packard bell should have some info on their site.

Yes, Quite a few of the older applications, espcaily games, developed graphical glitches and artifacts when viewed in more than 256 colors. A few of these program (I remember Kings Quest 7 for some reason) actualy told you that the program was best viewed in 256 color mode (and they were correct)

It is integrated. Packard Bell no longer has support for their old US models. I can't find a site that does.

An even longer shot would be to install Windows XP on it.....it has drivers for everything it seems. (Up to the time it was released, that is.) It would probably run pretty slow though, depending on how old the computer is.

Does anyone know where I can find this driver for 98SE. I found one for 95 but it doesn't seem to work.

He said 16 colors, not 16 bit, a difference of about 16 million colors. 256 is 16 times 16.

I hate to nit-pick but it's a difference of exactly 65520 colors
16 million colors is 24-bit color
