Well, you come to an english-speaking country, you should know english. But there are some places that have people employed (like me) that can translate spanish into english and vice versa. So I guess that place doesn't.

thats messed up. I know how foreigners feel in this country, because when i went to japan and ordered food at a restaraunt, i couldn't speak a lick of japanese and people gave me the funny eye and in some places i felt unwelcome.
the reason why america is so great is because we're open to other cultures and languages. a sign like this is divisive, counterprogressive and retarded, IMO. most immigrants know that they need to learn english, theres no need to rub it in their face. Genos and pats suck anyway, any true philadelphian goes to jims or tony lukes.

+1 for the ruling!!

This is great. People that complain about that sign are morons - just order in fucking english! You're in a country that speaks English almost exclusively, if you can't say "whiz with", well....don't go to Genos.

Have you ever been to pats/genos? Those places are literally jam-packed 24/7. Not only do they NEED an efficient ordering process to support that, to be blunt, a couple of non-english speakers boycotting ain't gonna hurt them.

Good, then they shouldn't have a problem with the sign, as they'll be able to speak English.

If you come to this country, speak the language. Being able to communicate is a necessary part of being able to function in a society, even for something as simple as ordering a cheese steak. I have no problem at all with people coming here from other countries, but you need to be able to communicate.

If it said, "When ordering, please do so if you are of white American descent," or, "Please refrain from ordering if you weren't born in this country," then that would be counter-progressive and divisive.

they should have a sign that says "proper english only" to show even more ignorance

Is it a popular tourist destination? How many languages are going to be made available? We've got quite a few to pick from.

If I remember correctly, they will teach people how to order in English.

Besides, how do non-English speakers know what the sign says anyway?

I do - I'll always at a minimum make an attempt at bungling the language of the land before resorting to English.

My view on this is that the world (yes - world) would be better off with a single common language. I'm actually rather impartial to what language that ends up being (my inner lazy bastard says English would be great) - there are many, many factors that would go into choosing it.

However, that's impractical. It's equally impractical to expect a state to operate in more than one language. I understand we have many Spanish speakers in the US; that in itself doesn't bother me. I think it makes good business sense for anyone with a business in an area with many Spanish-speakers to have some bi-lingual people working there. I draw the line, however, at using my tax dollars to make extra signs, manuals, reference materials, schoolbooks, pay for training or anything else on a state level that in effect removes the impetus to learn the language of the land.

America is "The Melting Pot" - or so I learned as a child. It's not the "Chunky-Stew-where-everything-enjoys-the-sauce-but-maintains-it's-own-independence-at-the-same-time Pot"

Ah - I wouldn't expect anyone to be able to help me in English if I were in a non-English speaking country. I'd be grateful if they did, but by NO means would I expect it. Why would you??
