All I am saying is that the prank was likely not intended to seriously injure someone. Although certainly dumb, I'm sure they weren't saying "hahah, lets go get someone killed."
Keep in mind, our prison's are about rehabilitation not punishment. Does this 18 year old kid need to be rehabilitated and have not only 1 persons life ruined but 2 over a prank? While I agree he deserves some form of punishment, locking him up and throwing away the key isn't the answer. The worst punishment he can ever get is knowing that he took part in ruining someone elses life.
I am certain that the majority of people here have done things that they would NEVER do now because it could result in some serious consequences.
somehow im sure your attitude over this incident would change if the injuried people were your brother, sister, mom, dad, or maybe even yourself.....id love to see you laugh it off while you keep saying 'boys will be boys' as your brain damaged family member sits next to you...
im sure these kids families will be ruined financially from the civil lawsuits that im sure will be filed
No one is laughing here, and i'm not blaming the parents or anyone else involved for prosecuting over it. You are totally putting words into my mouth. The problem i see is that most here are wanting to abuse the prison system. Prisons are meant for rehabilitation. If this kid has any concience at all, he already knows he did something seriously wrong, he is serving his punishment probably everyday. He does deserve a punishment more than a few hours of community service. But do we really need to ruin his life over an obvious dumb decision that he made? In my opinion this kid should recieve no more punishment than an adolecent behind the wheel of a car who is drunk and seriously injured someone. I'm not sure what the punishment is for such a thing, but I find it to be on the same level. I think many people here who started drinking at a young age could identify themselves with such a situation in which they were lucky enough to not have something horrible, such as this, happen.
on the flipside if they are spoiled rich kids, and since they recieved no severe sentence, and were able to enjoy their football season because their parents knew the judge could give them a sense of 'hey we got away with it once maybe we can get away with something again'
im sure prison would scare the crap out of them and set them straight...
this is akin to sending a kid to his room (which has a plasma, xbox, computer) vs. spanking...
