THIS is my last system!!!

i am running out of muny upgrading this and that every few months... my p3-800 with voodoo5 good for a few more months till all the new game systems come out ie x-box...... HOW the hell can somebody spend 1000-1500 a year on computers relay say it was worth it.... this 800 will be good for general surfing and regular office use but after this sysem no upgrading saving up for an x-box any others here think like me or will you guys keep spending that extra dollar for the extar 10-15% speed ... i have had it gona put my money on my car its not been moded for a year now...... at least wit a car mod its goan be good for a long time not just 6 months.,...

I do not upgrade a lot because of the performance so much, just the fun of opening up the box and working on it

yah i like to tinker with a system as much as the next man... but i mean it cost a lot to buy parts to upgrade .. ie HD 150 ram 100 it may be cheap in the pc world but money is money and 100 for 5-10% performance increase i can not justfy that... i figure the xbot at 500 or what ever they price it will be a good fast game system for at least 2 years if not more and if i can hook it up to my moniter then hay it will be a faster game system then what i have now and will be able to run in high res.... what killed it for me interms of prices was the gf3 i mean 500 american for a video card come on that is mindbogling.....

I used to be one of those constant upgrader's, but I quit for a year or maybe a bit more. You are right it's not really worth it to spend 1000-1500 a year for the slight speed increases... but its more for the fun of it. Heh I'd probably still be upgrading semi-annually if I had the time and money.

and why do we upgrade for fun i think that is 50% of it 25% braging rights and finally 25% to get the estra 10fps in quake 3.... ah ha ha ha/// i am out it has been fun i will still upgrade little things ie ram or HD and live whith what i have and get the xbox.... mybe ps2 don know yet we will see which system is doing better in the fall... but till falll my 800 better be enough to play the latest games well....

I sell my used parts for the price of new equipment (sometimes a little more or a little less than the new equipment) and I can write off all of my new equipment to my business. BTW...I build my system for increased speed for graphics...photos not games. But I do play games every once in a while.

Also, $1500 a year...I wish. In the last month I have spent $3500 (scanner, new mobo, dual CPU & 36GB SCSI).

1000-1500 a year? i guess that would depend on how heavy you are into upgrading, and if you do it yourself or get prebuilt (or someone else to do the upgrades...) personally i've put about 120$ into my t-bird 1.1GHz with 512mb ram, 45gb, etc... you just gotta manage your trading =) sure i have no spare parts left but....

$500 for the Xbot?

If it does cost that much, it wont last for 2 years cause it will have priced itself right out of the market.

PS2 - $300 - Brand Recognition, some well known games. 3rd party support. Squaresoft!

Gamecube - $250 - Great, well known game franchises. NINTENDO! Early game demos make the GF3 demos and 3DMark look down right laughable.

Xbox - $500? - No brand recognition or game franchises. Lots of advertising.

Lets see, if i going to get a game system, what would I get:

$350 for a PS2 and the latest Final Fantasy Game?
$350 for a Gamecube and the new Zelda AND Metroid?
$550 for a Xbox and a game I can get for my PC also?

Microsoft better come in at competative price point or they are beat before they even start.

Maters not, I still gotta have my PC fix!

One of the ways to slow the upgrade fever is to stay away from ads and news that temptape you. It is fun to upgrade an tinker but most of the time I find myself just rationalizing after the fact. Just ask yourself: do I really need this? Most of tyhe times the answer wil be:
NOT Really.

One reason the x-box has to retail so high is because it has the geforce3 at it's core, which retails on the card for over 350. And, of course microsoft has to add their own components to it as well...and make a huge profit.

Just a small thing, the Gamecube will most likely cost under 200 dollars. It is by far the cheapest option, although there have been rumors that Sony is going to cut the PS2's price in the fall (which will almost assuredly happen with gamecube and XBox coming out)

I do 'delayed' upgrades. On most components, I'll wait until the product has run it's cycle and is the previous generation from the current offering.

Or upgrade when I see a hot deal on something that's at least 40 percent below market value.

Personally, I'm not a real gamer. So don't need a fast T-bird or P4. Web surfing, office processing, e-mail, CD burning, downloads and sometimes a fling with Civ II or Railroad Tycoon is enough for me. I play around a bit with Linux and Solaris. For Windoze, a PIII 800 is quick enough for me.

Plan on getting a couple of PIII 1 GHz for my dual rig though. When the prices drop, of course.

I upgrade only when the prices drop signifacantly for the best stuff.

When the prices drop alot more I'm gonna get:
1) GeForce2-Ultra
2) Athlon Palamino
3) DDR-SDRAM motherboard
4) 256MB DDR-SDRAM

Aye, the PS2 is supposed to drop it's price by $100 in the fall, so it will be only around $200, which is when I'll probably pick one up.

I also saw the preview for the Final Fantasy movie in the theatres a few nights ago. All I can say is WOW.

i hardly every upgrade... jus build new ones.. heh as for as being "obsolete" in six months... jus because something newer is out there doesnt mean its obsolete... oh well..
