This is really the cost of plane tickets?

I have been looking to plan my summer trip to San Diego. To fly from Charlotte NC to San Diego is around 450$? Does that seem right to you guys. I remember a whole ago some commercials from major airlines that mentioned coast to coast flights for under 200.

Should be able to find something in the $300 to $350 range. Of course the closer to deadline you book the more expensive the flight will be.

Does Southwest have a HUB around Charlotte?

That's pretty cheap for round-trip across the entire country. You probably couldn't even drive it for that price. I doubt you'll find anything much cheaper. US Air has a hub in Charlotte, not sure about SD. Check them and check for non-weekend tickets if you want to save money.

Actually that is pretty cheap if you ask me.

Flight costs are normally jacked now. Last December I flew from NY to Detroit to the UP of MI for like $600, booked about 7 days in advance. In May I was looking to fly to Detroit for an interview, and it was going to be $1200 from NY to Detroit, about 7-8 days in advance. Yeah that sounds like a.... total ripoff.

It was cheaper to fly from NY to Philly to Minneapolis to Detroit. WTF!

well $450 round trip is $225 one-way . . .

a short search show some $350 RT fares in July, but plenty in the $450 range too

I flew round-trip from Boston to Phoenix for about $220 in May. How far out are you buying your ticket? If it's within a couple weeks, you can expect the prices to skyrocket.

with a quick Google maps inquiry, the shortest/best distance from Charlotte to San Diego is 2,383 miles

assuming ~33mpg highway @ $3.50 per gallon average, that's ~$250 for just one way, and the trip will take at least 2 days of driving if you can switch drivers and drive non stop...so more likely 3+ days of travel, again, just one way.

Really, $450 round trip or $225 one way is still a bargain when strictly considering cost of fuel and cost of saved time and hassle

Check Air Tran. I am also in CLT and I can find some decent deals with them as long as you're ok with one stop.

Yup, that sounds about right. If its a direct flight then definitely yes. You can try and find a layover and probably bring it down by a few $$ But from my many trips to NC that is about the price for a direct flight

How about $159 each way from Raleigh Durham to San Diego?

Of course, you can't fly until August 23rd...

Otherwise, it looks like $249 each way is the best price Southwest has to offer for that route.

Jet Blue will fly you from Charlotte to NYC or Boston...then to San Diego, with the lowest fare being $219 each way.

As always, your travel dates are a big factor. Certain days are cheaper and booking at least 21 days in advance will usually save you quite a bit too.

That is about right. I flew from Southern USA (East TX) to NY City about 2 months ago and it was about $500 after all the taxes and fees.

Anything $300 is a steal for me, round-trip and no crazy stop over.

Now $600-1200 I don't see a reason for unless its really peak holiday or busy event. But if u must, u must.

About two weeks or less means you pay a lot more. While you'd think more people on the flight is better, they do flight planning and such ahead of time. Or at least that's what I think haha.

This isn't necessarily true. If you wait long enough and a flight isn't booked, the fares will sometimes go down as the flight date approaches as the airline tries to fill the plane. That's always a gamble, of course, depending on how rigid your schedule needs to be.

OP never mentioned whether he's flying solo or as a group. If group driving would be cheaper as everyone could chip in and take turns driving. Driving may not be an option tho if he has time constrains.

You should have jumped on the southwest deal last week. It would have been like $120 each way.
