Ridiculous. It's hard for me to see how this law would fulfill any legitimate public interest, and it's clearly intended to discourage women from seeking abortions for fear of being stigmatized. One wonders whether Oklahoma wants this case to reach the Supreme Court as a test balloon for what the Roberts Court will do with Roe v. Wade.

I call it political thuggery.

Just to be clear the data that will be posted will NOT include the names of individuals. Hell that's a HIPAA violation. What it will be is basically a statistical database.

Not that it makes it any better, but really it is nothing to get your panties in a wad over and is no different than posting births or deaths in the newspaper.

This is a violation of the woman's right to medical privacy and shame on Oklahoma for enacting such a blatant affront to the rights of its citizens.

I can, at a strech, understand the state collecting some of this information. Posting it online or making it pubilcly available through anything less than a FOIA request is unacceptable. If thi moves forward, it should be overseen by an independent ethics committee, and subject to the purview of the NIH.

This is what you dont understand. They want it struck down.

Pro-choice advocates have been dreading an abortion case making it to the SCOTUS.

I personally would like to see the 'demographics' of those who chose abortion. The county information probably should be eliminated though...a tad too granular. On a side note...saying something is ridiculous is sufficient commentary?

Won't make it that far and it wouldn't matter if it did, despite what pro-lifers whisper to each other.

It will never be repealed and even the judges who the Lifers think are on their side, are really not. This will not bring any new angles to what is already settled.

It's just more posturing by the "can't mind my own fucking business" crowd.

Oklahoma women undergoing abortion procedures will be legally forced to reveal:

1) Date of abortion
2) County in which abortion is performed
3) Age of mother
4) Marital status of mother
5) Race of mother
6) Years of education of mother
7) State or foreign country of residence of mother
8) Total number of previous pregnancies of the mother

Sounds like great statistical data. What's wrong with it?

Not only is it stupid but it further puts the right wing hypocrisy to a higher level in terms of making government smaller.

Where is religion of mother? Nah, that data would be useless (and probably eye opening).

It's ironic to me that the same party that passes such obviously fatally flawed statutes also rails against government waste (how much $$ is going to be spent to defend such a defective law?) and excessive litigation in our society (why pass a law that is clearly invalid except to force litigation to nullify it).

The GOP hss got to start acting like responsible adult citizens rather than zealots looking for hot button issues that appeal to their core member's emotions.

Stupidity and waste is not a necessary result of political beliefs, but it sure is a frequent by-product.

Such data is general kept in private database by trained personnel who are familiar with HIPAA and required to comply with it. Making information like this publicly available is very iffy. For example, the NIH conducts the (National Health and Nutrition Study) NHANES, and must take many steps to properly anaonymize the data.

Couple that with involuntary particpation, which violates the principles of Informed consent laid out in the Declaration of Helskinki, the Belmont report, and by multiple proceeding of the International Council on Harmonization in Clinical trials, and you've just jeopordized the cornerstone of all patients' rights legislation following the fall of Nazi Germany.

Yes...add religion too. And while we're at it...let's add whether the unwanted pregnancy was the result of rape, incest, or the result of a potential threat of loss of life to the mother. Nothing wrong with getting data and shedding some light on what's actually going on...I must be missing something here....but sensitivity is admittedly not my strong suit.

In a board full of inane posts, this is a standout - I honestly can't recall ever, in my many years here, seeing a post of this length so lacking in content. It's ironic that it ends with you, well, complaining about a lack of content. What a world!
