my friend just got a fx5200 to put in his p4 2.0 system...and he tried to install it but i think it corrupted his windows...he cant run like any programs and i told him to go into device manager to see what it said for display adapters but it is blank??!! the whole device manager is blank..this is Win XP i think home..

he has some old Hard drives laying around...whats the best way to back up files onto those if he needs to reformat?

i told him to use his CDRW to back up files...but that apparently doesnt work now either...

Device manager, right click, 'scan for hardware changes'. Thats a start.

Other than that i'm not too sure what to say, the IDE controller has to be working/detected or else it wouldn't have booted up.

I don't think this is totally uncommon though since I have a friend who's old 5200 (who now has a 9600) caused a lot of the multimedia acceleration on his system to malfunction.

did he have an older card in. its probably tryign to run those drivers on the newer card. u should've uninstalled the older drivers before putting in the new card.

Might be a defective card. Does taking the card out and putting the old one back in make the problem go away? You might also want to try booting into safe mode (hold down F8 after system POST to load startup menu for this option) and remove any stray graphics card entries in the Device Manager.

Can he reboot F8 get into safe mode. Then if he didn't diable it. Use system restore and roll back the system. Shut down put back in old card. Boot up then uninstall that card and it's drivers.
Shut down install new card start up and install drivers

When installing a new video card (or just upgrading the drivers) you should ALWAYS uninstall the existing drivers and setup the OS with standard SVGA driver built into the OS. This assures the least problems occuring.

I would say to uninstall the current card's drivers AND the old cards drivers (if not already done) and after rebooting setup the OS as a standard SVGA card, reboot and then install the latest drivers for the new card. If the old card was a nVidia card there is a utility on their website that assures the total uninstall/deletion of all old nVidia driver files so I would highly suggest you use that first.

What's so bad about buying a 5200? Did you ever stop to think that maybe not everyone is a gamer? For looking at videos and browsing the web, what is a $300 card going to give you that is more?
