Even if there was a gas leak, wouldn't you just prop the door open as you leave? Don't just stay inside lol.

Of course it would still make a funny news article as all the employees go stand around outside for no reason.

As for minimum wage, considering the cost of living yes I do think it needs to increase. There should be a student wage, that does not have to be as high, and a non student wage, that is higher. You simply cannot survive on $15/hour let alone whatever it is set at today. Something needs to happen to either raise salaries, or lower costs of living.

Definitely prop the door and get out. Break a window... that ought to get anyone's 'this must be a joke' sense.

And absolutely 100% agree with a student wage concept.

Don't get me wrong, it'd be great if everyone out there was capable of working a job that wasn't McDonalds, but the plain and simple truth of the matter is that there a good chunk of people who simply lack the mental capacity to do much more. If you take a physically demanding (higher paying) job, when your body breaks down or you are permanently injured on the job, your career opportunities become severely limited. At the end of the day, this country is always going to have folks that are quite possibly at best a food server at McDonalds or Applebees. They can wish all they want for something better, but the reality is simply that there are far more qualified folks for other positions they are seeking.

At the end of the day, adults that work at McD's may have families to support, and their best means is working their shift at McDs. $15 won't cut it there. And while some folks here are going to shit on them for not getting a better job... well, good for you I guess? All I know is, I'll stop at a McDs for breakfast every now and again and the folks behind the counter seem like good, nice, honest people. Is it an ideal job for anyone? Probably not. But if it pays the bills for them, and gives them what they need to support their family, good. They can always hope for a better job, but the reality is, the next step up from something like that probably has a list of candidates a mile long with 2 openings available. It is what it is I guess.

Inflation has not warranted a $15/hr high schooler job.

This is crushing for a small business owner......He'll have to jack up his prices thereby adding to inflation (which is what Yellen seeks).

I remember when I earned $4/hr. in h.s. That was pretty damn low. Back in the day, $6 would have been a sweet spot of being taken advantage of.
Prices will go up everywhere. . And it's a transition to 15 over many years, not overnight.

Hell I got better than a $15/hr raise to move to NJ...I couldn't imagine living here for that. It's probably a lot less expensive to live outside of the NYC metro area, though...a blanket minimum wage number doesn't make sense. $30k in South Carolina is a lot different than $30k in NYC.
Well I live on South Jersey, which is a much different experience than living in North Jersey.

And while we're here..

Mexico City's leftist Mayor Miguel Ángel Mancera proposed to lift the federal minimum wage to 82.86 pesos a day ($6.33) for 2015, a 23% increase from the current 67 pesos ($5.12) in Mexico City

http://www.wsj.com/articles/mexico-debates-boosting-its-low-minimum-wage-1409251093

In 2012:

or workers in Shenzhen, a major manufacturing base for Foxconn, the increase raises monthly salaries to between 2200 yuan (US$350) and 2500 yuan. Previously, monthly salaries for Foxconn's Shenzhen workers were at 1800 yuan.

http://www.pcworld.com/article/250298/foxconn_to_increase_workers_wages_in_china.html

That's what you're competing against. Then throw in even more corruption than what's here, lax workers rights, lax environmental regulations, and other things I'm not aware of.

Nobody whose job can be replaced by a machine should make that much.

Some fast food places already have touchscreen terminals where you can enter your own order. I wish they'd all do this so you would only need the people making the food there. The money savings from getting rid of the button pushers would be glorious
I was in a Taco Bell in the late 90s in... I think it was Tennessee. It had touch-screens for ordering, in the place where you'd normally stand in line. It was great.
Twenty years later? Well, I guess you can order from the app on your phone now.
So we've got that going for us.

Laws requiring that American workers be paid $15 an hour creates a market for illegal immigrants who will work for less.

And isn't it interesting that the Democrat Party favors a higher minimum wage AND they favor policies that encourage illegal immigration? Isn't this just one more policy to give jobs to illegal immigrants?

Not to mention people who may have just gotten laid off - we hear of mass layoffs almost every day now. They still have to work, and most jobs require tons of experience and/or credentials so if there's nothing immediately in their field, service jobs like McDonald's might be the only choice till they can figure out what to do with their lives such as going back to school.

A solution to that is to just not allow illegal immigrants to have a job. I'm really not sure why the US has not done this yet. There is no need for a wall, if they can't get a job, they probably won't try to cross in first place.

If you have a minimum wage that doesn't keep pace with the rest of the economy, it's actually used as a maximum wage. Its effect is to increase the distance between the haves and the have-nots, which is the opposite of what it's supposed to be for.

Umm..............if you didn't already know, legally they cannot have a job. They are illegally in this country, they cannot legally get a job obviously. Unless you propose spending the insane tax dollars for someone to check out every worker at every place in this country, it's not easy to stop.

Don't you need to provide SIN and other personal info when applying for a job? I would imagine they run that on the computer to find out stuff like where you live? In this age where our information is at the finger tips of governments, corporations etc I can't see how it would be that hard to do.

Also in answering one of your previous posts, you are right the overall low price of production in China being a massive combination of things that legitimately are a supreme detriment to everyone (pollution, lack of workers rights). My current employer had attempted to open up some business in China only to not continue with it after a couple years because of how much corruption existed and all the underhanded dealing involved with the Chinese government.

Despite the lack of workers rights, and the often insect-colony-like hive mind mentality that is very much a part of the Chinese culture, I do not think what happened at Foxconn a couple years back will be the end. From an American's point of view, one should voice their opinion, and one could also refuse to buy anything manufactured by Foxconn. Too many people are unwilling or just plain ignorant to find out where their products come from, and most people don't care. It can also be difficult to find out where and who produce certain products, since the front label is most of what you see and the only digging you can do is product disassembly.

I just found out I have at least one Foxconn product: our PS4. Goddammit!

I'm curious what you think happens here. Apart from people who are paying cash to illegals for simple day labor, you really don't knowing hire illegals. You need paperwork to be properly employed... the problem is there's a HUGE black market for fake papers. So companies will hire people that check out as far as the required paperwork is concerned. They may be suspicious about the validity of it, but they can't be sure.

Work hard and be worth promoting when a higher position becomes available, or find another place of employment that is willing to pay you more for your accumulated experience and skills.

I'm already "being paid for my accumulated experience and skills". 16 years in various kitchens (fast food, quick service dine in, full service, chef position) and still only making 15/hr.

Simple solution to this: If they have immaculate paperwork, but can't speak English, don't hire them. It should be 100% a requirement to work in the US is to have basic conversational English with a grasp on slang and idioms.

Uhhh you realize that in all likely hood most of things you have listed in your signature are made at Foxconn or foxconn-like facilities?

Yup. I'm aware that just because they haven't made the rounds in the media doesn't mean they don't have issues too. None of the components in my desktop are Foxconn at least. The Lenovo Yoga and any monitors I own are very likely to be Foxconn manufactured though.

If you think you're worth more you have every right to demand a raise, or find another place of employment that will pay you a higher wage. You could also get more education while working to move into a different field. Remember that you may not be an easily replaceable employee, which can give you more bargaining power, especially if another employer is interested in you. Remember that giving a two-weeks notice is a "nice thing to do" since it gives the employer adequate time to find a replacement, but not a requirement on your behalf. Leaving and quitting at the end of the day means the employer might lose a huge amount of productivity until you are replaced.

Simple solution to this: If they have immaculate paperwork, but can't speak English, don't hire them. It should be 100% a requirement to work in the US is to have basic conversational English with a grasp on slang and idioms.

Good luck with that.

Foxconn is probably the "best" in China because it has Apple and their image machine kicking them in the ass. How bad are the other ones that don't get so much attention...

I know someone who spent 40 years in my country, full citizenship attained, but still can't make it through a phone call beyond "hello." After that, it's "sorly, I no speak english gut" -- I literally heard him say that multiple times. He had a union job with the municipality. My guess is that he never really did much at work.

I agree with you, but with our current discrimination laws you really can't do that. You can't look at somebody and basically tell them they're too foreign looking/sounding for their paperwork to be valid. After that lawsuit they won't have to work for you to get your money.

You can absolutely do that. Language proficiency (English or otherwise) is a requirement for all sorts of jobs.

Only if you tell them "We're not hiring you because you don't speak English". Here in Texas at least, a vague "not a good fit for the company" is more than enough to get you off that hook.

You don't deserve $15 flipping burgers. Those types of jobs aren't meant to be permanent jobs.

they won't be. They will be replaced by machines. There is no reason to have an actual person taking the order. Make the food, sure. But order taking can be completely automated.
