You simply cannot survive on $15/hour let alone whatever it is set at today. Something needs to happen to either raise salaries, or lower costs of living.

You get a second job, you work on weekends. You don't buy an Xbox or PS4, you don't get a cell phone plan from Verizon that includes data, you don't pay for cable or internet for $80 a month. You work.

Damn I wish I made $15/hr. I thought $13.13/hr, 35 hours a week was pretty nice at my previous job, plus all employees received a quarterly bonus. Shouldn't have moved away to be with my wife......or I really should've forced her to move up to me. Not in as good a job and position for completing school, but things are "getting there" I guess......

At the beginning of said "previous job" I was making $8/hr, 40 hours a week, which was barely enough but I had a second job along with it to pay for the $600/month apartment +bills I had at the time. Getting raised to $8.80 a year later and all the bonuses + tax return helped immensely and I ditched the second job.

Read a story on both of these recently. Idiots working at the restaurants are true lulz worthy.

As for the wage, a significant portion of those that will see the wage bump aren't those that need higher wages so net effect is just an increase in inflation without any meaningful impact to the poverty level.

i went to mcdonalds yesterday for the first time in months. there was a new girl working the cash register taking my order with someone helping her. after i placed my order and waited for the food, the guy behind me ordered an ice cream cone. at this point, the trainer had stepped away.

after the guy ordered an ice cream cone, the new girl turned around and saw the ice cream machine and did not know how to use it. she then went and got the trainer and asked her what to do and said that she was not trained on how to use the ice cream machine.

this is the same ice cream machine that 5 year olds use at those "fill your own cup" frozen yogurt spots where you just pull the lever down and the ice cream just flows out.

i was pretty surprised that someone who is an adult working at a restaurant did not know how to use one of those machines. i'd be shocked if this person was making $15/hr.

did it occur to you that maybe she, as a new trainee, was just being cautious and wanted to ensure that it really is as simple as it seems? Maybe didn't want to risk her job by trying to dispense the ice cream on her own, just in case there is a special procedure she has to follow.

Foxconn is probably the "best" in China because it has Apple and their image machine kicking them in the ass. How bad are the other ones that don't get so much attention...

I know someone who spent 40 years in my country, full citizenship attained, but still can't make it through a phone call beyond "hello." After that, it's "sorly, I no speak english gut" -- I literally heard him say that multiple times. He had a union job with the municipality. My guess is that he never really did much at work.
The funny part is that you don't go to say Bulgaria or Rwanda expecting everyone else to speak your language, you know going there you are going to have to try to speak their language. Unfortunately people come here and expect us to learn their language.

I started off at my current employer, warehouse work, making $9.50/hr and worked my way up and make over $50k now just by busting my ass and making sacrifices to move up. Sure I'm not rich, living in the LA area, but whenever there was an opening for something, I was bumped up because I showed them I was worth more because I didn't want to make crappy money forever. You can move up at retailers and fast food if you just put a little effort in your job. Take pride in what you do even if it's a shitty minimum wage job.

Now that the minimum wage is going up, of course everyone else's wage is going to have to go up, including mine.
In Brave new World, that behavior is known as sucking up. Why should suck-ups get paid more than fuck-ups. Just one little letter different. Hell, "f" and "s' used to be interchangeable!

Odd how often it's government who hires these people.

Not true. Many countries now speak English. I've worked in Asia, and I've noticed that many foreigners are downright ignorant. I've met guys who lived in South Korea for 10 years plus. Not one could speak Korean fluently. Their wives translated everything for them. And here is the kicker. Their Korean wives could speak English well.

I live in a resort town in NJ. In the summer, we have students from China, Thailand, Romania, Vietnam, Japan, Korea and they can all speak English well.

You'd know this if you traveled and stopped sucking on your mama's nipple.

They do? Do you have any examples?

I'm not sure about his experience, but in Manassas the immigrants (legal or not) love to learn english and pretend they dont speak it. Gives them an edge.
They are also quite fine with with Americans not bothering to learn spanish for the same reason.

I know. I learned spanish in college specifically because thats what many immigrants (legal or not) speak around here. They take great joy in picking on Americans when they think no one is listening.

I know people like that, that 's a horrible life. You should not need to have two jobs just to be able to pay the bills. Yet that seems to be the reality for a lot of people. There is no point to living if you have to work 80+ hours a week just so you can keep a roof over your head. Companies have to stop being so greedy and governments have to stop facilitating their greed. Outsourcing and unwillingness to pay decent wages has become an epidemic and it's only going to get worse if nothing is done.

If housing/utilities/tuition etc have remained flat since the last minimum wage increase, then there is no reason to increase the minimum wage. :hmm:

Natural gas alone went up by like 75% a few years ago, hydro keeps going up as well. city taxes, city water/sewer etc goes up every year too. Food has gone up quite a lot too. Pretty much everything keeps going up. I'm lucky that I make a decent amount of money (A bit over $30/hour) but at some point it won't be enough, as everything keeps going up. I'm already starting to look into what it would take to generate my own energy as eventually I'll have to. Though my main goal is to pay off the house faster as making extra payments makes a huge difference on the mortgage. With normal payments more than half goes towards interest. So I'm hoping by the time costs of living are too high that the house will be paid off. I'm sure it will get tight towards the end and I should probably actually sit down and calculate when the breaking point is going to be.

Oil/gasoline is about the only thing that went down, but this is short term, I'm sure it will be back up to where it was, if higher, by the end of the year. It already started to go up a bit. It's back at over a buck a litre now. Though still very low compared to the norm.

Probably should look towards countries that do have a $15 an hour minimum wage like Australia.

1) No one leaves tips.
2) It enables people to pay for College/University to open up new possibilities for a career.
3) Higher wages, more disposable income, people spend more money, the wheels of the economy turn.
4) Other jobs that are seen as more "valuable" typically increase in the amount of wages paid.
5) You only pay an extra 50-70 cents for a Big Mac, whilst opening up possibilities for those workers.
6) American minimum wages have been stagnant for decades, despite inflation, a dollar today is worth less than a dollar 10 years ago... Thus an hours work today is worth less than it is 10 years ago. - In 1970 the minimum wage was $1.60 an hour. Today if you account for inflation... Would be worth $10.71. Instead it's $7-$9 in most states. Why? Because a few people are worried about a few cents extra on unhealthy food?

Here we go.

As for minimum wage... I'm starting to thing it should be weighted based on age and location. If an adult working full time can't afford to put a roof over his head and feed himself and a dependent, in the local real estate market, wages need to go up -I've always thought that.

But the teenagers working at the local sporting goods store on the weekend? They're getting current minimum wage, they're happy about it, and I'm having a hard time being not-okay with that.

Of course, you get what you pay for in terms of customer service skills and whatnot. Damn kids.

So... hooray for Amazon?

You don't deserve $15 flipping burgers. Those types of jobs aren't meant to be permanent jobs.

And yet they are. The market is broken, upward mobility does not exist for many people.
It takes a bare minimum for people to function, economically. If you break them of that "right" you might as well tell them to eat cake.

If we're putting machines in fast food places shouldn't we start in the back? I'd rather have some idiot screw up my order than some idiot put semen or snot in my food.

Gas needs a hot car engine and some sparks!

And natural gas should have an odorant. Not to mention if natural gas were pressurized inside a building, you probably wouldn't be conscious to answer a phone call...

I feel that the most people who worry about $15 an hour are people who have a degree and have a shit job that pays just above that. Trying to justify that degree are we?

What gets me is that lots of people complain this but a topic near and dear to my hear is tips. A lot of waiters in mid class restaurants make $40-50 an hour.

Is their labor really worth that much money? I think not. They don't work any harder than a burger flipper or the cooks at the restaurant who get paid $9 an hour.
