I don't know what the average Chinese or Mexican salary is. But their middle classes have been increasing in droves the past few years.

As for environmental regulations, I never said anything about environmental regulations in the first place, but I'm not against them. The smog in China is absolutely horrendous and completely unhealthy for the populous.

Well, good luck with that then.

And environmental regulations... You aren't allowed to dump industrial waste in streams and lakes in certain countries -- something about people dying or getting cancer. Others look the other way. Cost of doing business is lower in one of these places.

I can't get a bearing on what you're trying to say. Were you under the impression that I was against all kinds of regulation, including ones designed to protect public health?

...However the caveat is often minimum wage laws and the wages demanded by workers, especially unionized ones. It's just cheaper to produce overseas for so many basic consumer products.

Sincerely,
Retail Worker & Welding Student

You stated, "It's just cheaper to produce overseas for so many basic consumer products."

I assumed you were aware of all the reasons why in addition to lower wages.

This is why it's best if wages stagnate for decades. Housing prices will remain the same. :hmm:

No, the state of Washington pegged minimum wage to inflation. It's $9.5 an hour right now.

Seattle increased minimum to $15 and almost all of that was consumed by rent.

There was a time when salespeople intimately knew their product and were knowledgeable. They could think on their feet and make a good living with limited education. But no, businesses wanted to "save money" by going the 7.25 an hour route. Their salespeople were reduced to little more than warm bodies that could do little more than read the features off a display. Businesses seem to think they can give the bare minimum and expect above and beyond in return, but it does not work that way. Pay stupid wages and you get stupid people.

You get what you pay for.

See: What happened to Circuit City after they got rid of commissioned sales.

Actually that's incredibly incorrect. They eliminated their commissioned sales in early 2000s Sears also did. The problem was Circuit City was playing follow the leader to Best Buy and just trying to repeat their successes instead of focusing on their own. Even after they get rid of commissioned sales it was management that decided to cut the hourly rate for employees to improve their financials. Guess what happened? Sales worsened and numbers dropped even harder.

There is serious talk in NJ to make $15 the new minimum wage.

Ummm OK. So, a gas attendant is going to get paid $15 an hour for sticking a gas nozzle in my tank. That makes a lot of sense.

*We still have full serve in NJ.

i went to mcdonalds yesterday for the first time in months. there was a new girl working the cash register taking my order with someone helping her. after i placed my order and waited for the food, the guy behind me ordered an ice cream cone. at this point, the trainer had stepped away.

after the guy ordered an ice cream cone, the new girl turned around and saw the ice cream machine and did not know how to use it. she then went and got the trainer and asked her what to do and said that she was not trained on how to use the ice cream machine.

this is the same ice cream machine that 5 year olds use at those "fill your own cup" frozen yogurt spots where you just pull the lever down and the ice cream just flows out.

i was pretty surprised that someone who is an adult working at a restaurant did not know how to use one of those machines. i'd be shocked if this person was making $15/hr.

Too bad the jobs that are meant to be permanent jobs are leaving the country or increasingly becoming obsolete by the year. Even if we reduced the pay of factory jobs to make our country "competitive" to China in a constant race to the bottom Americans would still be dealing with a shit sandwich either way.

Leaving the country? So manufacturing turning dials and boxing junk is a permanent job as well? You know though, technology might actually help bring jobs back. Previous manufacturing relied heavily on cheap labor, hence moving to China. But if we start making smarter technology with less human reliance, we can bring that manufacturing back to the states - Which would leave jobs that involve maintaining those machines.

No, I can't say the permanent jobs are leaving - but I can vouch that plenty of immigrants are coming over on visas to take a lot of them. My company hires tons of top talent out of India and brings them over as needed.

Commissioned sales is absolutely HORRIBLE for your business.

There is a reason I despise going into just about any furniture store - or any car dealership. People just non-stop trying to tickle my balls with their bullshit in order to try to make a buck off me. Annoying sales reps ALONE will keep me out of plenty of places.

If your life career is flipping a burger you're probably doing something wrong.
There is a high end restaurant here that sells $40 burgers. That's in CAD, so that's about US$30. Consequently, the burger flippers there make a decent wage apparently.

I had one once. It was good, but not US$30 good. The best one is from a local pub that hand chops steak into to tiny pieces to put into the burger. About 1/3rd the price and better.

Or else I'll just make them myself on my backyard BBQ for a few bucks and time.

I'm not so sure this wouldn't work on just about anyone. Personally I would just walk outside or see if I smelled gas before doing anything but I imagine there are plenty of people who would panic and do something stupid.

Look at all the executives and accountants who fall for phishing scams or social engineering.

Speaking of fast food employees, are they now getting paid to push their value meals? Every time I try to order something, they always want to make it a meal. I just want a chicken sandwich and a drink, not the fries. Why would they want to force this on me? They don't get paid commission that I am aware of, and they are just putting more work on their staff to add fries to it.

I started off at my current employer, warehouse work, making $9.50/hr and worked my way up and make over $50k now just by busting my ass and making sacrifices to move up. Sure I'm not rich, living in the LA area, but whenever there was an opening for something, I was bumped up because I showed them I was worth more because I didn't want to make crappy money forever. You can move up at retailers and fast food if you just put a little effort in your job. Take pride in what you do even if it's a shitty minimum wage job.

Now that the minimum wage is going up, of course everyone else's wage is going to have to go up, including mine.

Hell I got better than a $15/hr raise to move to NJ...I couldn't imagine living here for that. It's probably a lot less expensive to live outside of the NYC metro area, though...a blanket minimum wage number doesn't make sense. $30k in South Carolina is a lot different than $30k in NYC.

I was at a McDonalds last year and I think the cashier was a new employee... The trainer/whatever walked right up to her at the front, chastised her for not "upsizing."

That was probably my fault for just ordering an iced coffee and paying in cash.

Inflation has not warranted a $15/hr high schooler job.

This is crushing for a small business owner......He'll have to jack up his prices thereby adding to inflation (which is what Yellen seeks).

I remember when I earned $4/hr. in h.s. That was pretty damn low. Back in the day, $6 would have been a sweet spot of being taken advantage of.
