I can only speak for my locality (Metro Atlanta) and the culture of mall shoppers is to 'window shop' and just use the mall as a place to hang out. They hate being anywhere else (home, park, etc.) and just hang for hours at the mall. But I agree about how the margin items have huge margin on them, but that has always been the case.
Go back 20 years and buy a computer in retail. The profit (ahem, margin) wasn't on the computer, but the power strip, mouse pad, home office desk or chair, etc., which they pushed beyond belief. But not everything can be satisfied by Amazon. I wanted to buy a couple of Red NAS WDC 6TB drives and Amazon is not even selling them (as Ships From and Sold by Amazon). And when I look elsewhere I see that WDC sells them for less than online resellers.
What good does it do the customer for the manufacturer to say the Regular Price is $200 if online resellers claim $240-300 as the regular price and their discounted price is $220? I've caught NewEgg and Amazon pricing above the 'regular price' as advertised and sold by said manufacturer. At this point since I know Microcenter will price match Amazon I will attempt this weekend to get them to price match NewEgg or WDC.
