The Amott brothers smoke this guy, easily.

While I actually enjoyed that solo and while he is certainly a capable guitarist, it isn't technically the most proficient thing I've ever seen.

Ya, but the composition is good. I don't know much about music but I listened to the whole thing. Music quality is in the eye of the beholder.

The guy could pull off being in a jam band I think. And that is where you can actually make a decent career out of music. The guy can probably be improvisational. Not sure if the video is. That's why I like Buckethead and Les Claypool. Improvisational!

For example, I have heard this song many times, but each time is different:

Take 5 minutes and enjoy some live Nashville music guys... this dude is an insane guitarist as well as a great stage performer. The band plays on the weekends at a bar in downtown Nashville just across from the arena where the Predators play. Watch the whole thing if you want to be entertained or skip to about the 2:00 mark and give it 30-60 seconds before JD gets going.

Robert's Western World - Don Kelley Band (JD Simo on guitar)

Interesting note about that band, the guy who plays the stand-up/upright (however you want to call it) bass used to play for Johnny Cash. You don't see him in the vid as it's mainly focused on the guitarist but just thought I'd throw that out there.

That clip would be impressive if it were your buddy doing it. He's skilled, and technically competent, but it's boring to listen to, and a dime a dozen. There's guys doing stuff as good/better all over YouTube.

Merely a fraction of his talent.

He (and his brother) are guitarists for a melodic death metal band, Arch Enemy. If you're not already into that kind of music, the vocals can steer you away (until you get used to it, and eventually like it). But usually, for the sake of their unbelievably well written solos/riffs/leads, most non-metal fans can look past the vocals.

Tons of their stuff is on YouTube. Although all their albums are great, check out any songs (Vultures, The Day You Died, Night Falls Fast) from Rise of the Tyrant.

The music itself was bland and soulless, but technically he blows anything you "Oh well that's not so good, I know 50 people that could beat that" retards have ever seen. He was like a machine the notes were so clean with the speed he was playing.

Unfortunately for him, the bulk of music isn't simply methodically picking notes. The background track was overwhelming and the song itself boring and flat. He's obviously not going anywhere famous if that's his best stuff.

Soulless wanking. If you're going to play a bunch of notes fast, you're really no better off than people who can play Guitar Hero on expert.

The point playing music is to be, uh, musical. Even Neal Young's one note solos are more impressive than this dude from a musical perspective.

Texas flood -- SRV

A) the fingering for starters is really tough.

B) an then SRV puts tons of string and tremolo bends into the mix to give it that funk rock sound.

Few people can play the fingering for this properly let alone get the fingering right and also get all the intonation spot on at the same time.

Pretty awesome. Lots of wankers in this thread who don't like it because it isn't their style.

The pickup and amp settings he was using make it harder to hear fudges and imperfections in his playing but if you know what they'd sound like you would've heard some in his playing. He muffed some of the runs. But sloppy play is generally not as evident on the electric guitar.

On acoustic... there is no masking mistakes or imperfect fingering... you screw up on your fingering a note will not sound out or it will be muffled... a tone deaf person can tell when you mess up on an acoustic.

On electric, you can muff fingering pretty good and depending on settings, it is not really obvious at all... particularly on fast runs... the note will sound and maybe only be a little off in sound and fidelity... at lot of non-guitar players don't even notice.

But to your point... the solo has to actually sound good, first and foremost, to be amazing. On those grounds alone, the OP video is not amazing.
