Then you're not "getting" it. In guitar, particularly solos, certain notes and runs are not only intended to be played muffled, but flat, sharp, or at a different and variable pitch.

To the untrained or inexperienced ear, these can certainly lend themselves to imperfections or fudges, when they're INTENDED. Watch his other videos, he's not average or common. His style doesn't personally appeal to me, but that is the subjective part of music. Objectively, this guy is exceptional. He studied classical violin and guitar for nearly 10 years.

Um, no dude. I heard some mistakes in there, don't try and cover that up by calling that stylistic flair.

While he's certainly better than I am or ever will be, he suffers from what I would call the "Satrianni effect." It's a disease distinguished by an overwhelming desire to lay down simplistic, relatively uninteresting backing tracks which you proceed to solo over lifelessly, and release as an album. See "Surfing with the Alien" for a prime example of the condition.

For the record, I consider Steve Vai to be one of the best "soulful" shredders. He's put out some real garbage songs, but also some real jems. Have you ever watched him play? He's not simply hovered over his guitar making sure that every note is absolutely perfect. Look up "For The Love Of God" on Youtube.
