This is pretty crazy.

If anyone has Security Clearance (like me) they would know the process and the "full compliance" of information you have to provide on the SF-86 to obtain clearance.

Just imagine this get's released onto some dark website somewhere. People will see some very very very very private information about these individuals.

Far beyond on who has a clearance or not!!!!

Great, now the news will chew this up for the next 4 weeks and scare the shit out of everyone because there's nothing else to broadcast. I shall stick to ESPN. Thanks for the update though.

so is there any context to your babbling or have you finally snapped?

Have you ever worked for the Fed Gov/Contractor and obtained SC.

The Application for Clearance SF-86 is one of the most divulging documents you would ever complete in your life, sorry it's more of a BOOK!!!

I just saw a brief summary on the news. Sounded like in some cases it could be essentially every embarrassing item in your life, even some statements from people about drug use & relationships.
I've never had to get security clearance so my summary could be wrong.

When you fill out the SF-86 it usually goes back between 7 - 10 years on every single association in your life.

Your family, their family, their crim background etc.....
Your past drug use etc.
Even things that have been closed out and decided upon have to be listed
Psychological history
Grounds for divorce (if any, details)

Then there is the level of clearance. Example, TS-SCI (Top Secret [Sensitive Compartmental Information]) performs a polygraph. They ask you some pretty god dam personal questions.

filling out the sf86 is not fun for sure, and yeah it has A LOT of information on it.

in the wrong hands it could be bad. i know this is very extreme, but it could very easily be used in the terrorists hands as leverage to make someone with a clearance do something through threatening a family member since you have to include their addresses and stuff on there.

so while it may not seem like a big deal, someone who has extremely high access to stuff that terrorists might want, it could be used in a threatening manner to leak stuff to them or else they could kill your family. sure it sounds extremely hollywood, but it is a reality that could happen.

and if you don't know what the sf86 is, it's a public document, check it out.

How can I found out if this affects me? I submitted my application for a security clearance about three years ago and wound up taking another job while they processed the information (actually it had been accepted and I was due to start in a week but found a much higher paying job in that time). Does this hack affect information from that long ago?

The answer is "highly likely" yes, it does affect you. It appears to go all the way back to 2000.

So according to that site, OPM will be providing ID theft services to 20 million people, who will all apparently be notified with details in the mail in the next few weeks ....

Great. Well, let me just preemptively say that I was in college, starving, and needed the money.

Anyone that has had interaction with the Federal government as a federal employee, contractors or even applicants.
Anyone that has applied for or and/or been granted a clearance since 2000.

You are talking 15 years of time frame and roughly 1/5 of the US work force

well i guess this is good news for me...

In April 2015, OPM discovered that the personnel data of 4.2 million current and former Federal government employees had been stolen. This means information such as full name, birth date, home address and Social Security Numbers were affected. This number has not changed since it was announced by OPM in early June and you should have already received a notification if you were impacted.

i have not received any notification yet...

Your past drug use etc.

Does this mean if you disclose you've used drugs before, you don't get SC? Or would it still be possible?

Because if it's the former, that's like a question on a job application asking if you've ever been a convicted felon. May as well stop right there and walk out.

If you lie about it and they find out during the background check, you don't get it. If you tell them, they investigate and decide case by case but it will often go through

I'm sorry,

I didn't realize you don't own a TV/Internet/Computer/Newspaper.

Or have eyeballs/ears

LOL

When did this story break... yesterday? Yesterday after work I went outside and then out to socialize with real people in the real world. Then I went home and went to bed. Woke up, got ready and went to work. At no point in living my life during that time did I feel like I needed to be fed a bunch of doom and gloom stories from biased sources that prefer to blindly post stuff before fact checking it. So no... I'm not up to date
