What do other people think about this?

There wass something I saw about using a laser instead of the present read/write heads, which can supposedly cram even more data into a given area. There's always new advances being made; maybe RAID setups will gain even more popularity if there is a crunch for advanced technology. Flourescent holographic storage is in the works too; it's probably several years from the market, but when it goes get out, storage space should not be a problem.

I can buy an 80 giger for 200 something. Storage space is not a problem right now.

For mainstream computer, I don't think another 10 year of max hd size would be a problem, but for enterprise level that might be hard.
Currently in my company they backup around 1.3tb each day and I only work on software development company. I can't imagine those company that work in data mining. Maybe someone will invent new compression algorithm.

It's not a problem. Why? It refers to cramming more and more information per square inch. Sure, we will hit the wall at some point, then the hard-drives will just start to get physically larger. More platters, largers platters, more capacity, no problem.

Of course, you could also get more hard-drives.

With things like FireWire add on drives, and being able to chain more than a few SCSI drives together, plus other medium, we may be able to hold out until that groundbreaking technology arrives.

An interesting concept is the use of DVD-ROM-like devices as HDs, you could stack 50 layers/ disk (theoretically), allowing enourmous data storage capabilities. The only problem is rewriting.
