I don't quite know the context he was speaking in (I have not looked), but there was definitely a choice for at least one group of people when it came to slavery. White people *chose* to perpetuate that evil institution, and even fought a war in an attempt to maintain it.

Edit: to be clear, it was definitely not a "choice" for the enslaved.

Slavery isn't the only historical crime. The genocide of the natives on which almost everything else here is based on ....so the question of celebration becomes complicated...it isn't as simple as you put it

Don't underestimate the cult of trump. Once you are part of their team they have no problem giving you their money. Its a billion dollar industry and there is a reason why people are willing to say crazy stupid shit, because people are willing to pay to hear it.

The kind of slavery that overpopulation results from is sex trafficking and indentured servitude, not chattel slavery. That kind of slavery is historically a result of warfare.

Regarding the last sentence, the complex human psychology does not always support that assertion. The unknown is usually more fearful than the known. In a way we all choose to remain slaves. Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment, that amazing amazing section concerning The Grand Inquisitor....from it

There were plenty of slave rebellions in the Americas and even more escape attempts. The primary reason the south was so heavily militarized was due to fear of these rebellions. Simply put, rebellions were easier to put down in an age of highly accurate firearms and good transportation than they were in the old Roman times or whatever.
