a friend told me chantix worked well so i asked my doc for it. she had given me the patch a year ago which i failed at.

anyway, i've been on chantix for 6 days now. after 7 days she said i gotta quit. which i want. i've been smoking for about 25 years. last nite i smoked 2 packs in about 8 hours. today was 2 packs in about 12 hours. and now it's footbal season. i associate everything with smoking: coffee, football, meals, walking. so damn stupid. i when i leave the house i check for my keys, phone, money (maybe wallet) cigs and lighter. pathetic.

at least i get to see my son this weekend. he'll straighten me out.

Ouch man. Good luck with quitting, keep us updated on how it goes. I don't smoke as much but should really cut back / quit myself.

Good luck man. My dad smoked for over 35 years, and quit with the gum and a little will power. You can do it.

You are a heavy smoker. I don't understand why. In my employment, homelife, etc., I can never manage to smoke even a pack a day. I've smoked for exactly 34 years.

Good luck giving it up. My friend went cold turkey and just celebrated her 2 year anniversary.

i hope the chantix kicks in for you. it seems to be the best med to come down the pike in the quest to kick the habit.

Go Paul, Go!! Good luck my friend, just tell your friends/family/coworkers to be patient with you in the meantime. They'll understand your anxiety and hopefully help you work through it.

Your lungs will thank you for this. About 6 months from now they'll be pink again and not black. :Q

We talked about this via PM awhile back. Best of luck, remember, quitting seems to work best with lots of water, no coffee and plenty of mild exercise.

I quit for 13 years then started again behind one cigar. Then it took 5 years to get this present 16 months and dang do I feel good. Got up to 258# but with daily bicycle rides and a better diet I am back to 236 and heading, hopefully, to 210. My blood pressure is like a teenager, 110/70 with a resting pulse of 68...not bad for a 60yo.

Your PMs are always welcome rise. Hang in there buddy.

Good luck to you. I'm struggling (I like to say "struggling" like the drunk Joe Namath) right now, it being summer and what not. I've been sneaking smokes on the down low here and there lately, just askin for trouble. It's nasty business but I just can't shake it!

edit: on and off smoker for about 13 years now.

Using the patch, I quit 4.5 months ago. I smoked about 1.5 packs a day for 18 years. Just remember that it gets easier every day you go without smoking. It probably took me 3 months before I got to the point where I could go a whole day without thinking about smoking.

i quit cold turkey just over 2 years ago. pack a day smoker for about 8 years. one thing i did was to take huge breaths of oxygen coupled w/ some visualization. when id get a craving, i'd take HUGE breath of air and hold it, hard against my lungs. i'd do that about 4 or 5 times in a row. it really calms you down, holding your breath can make you lightheaded and dizzy (sorta like a nicotine buzz) & i'd imagine the fresh o2 making my lungs nice and pink again. the cravings would go away not soon after.

there were times when it was rough, but i feel so much better having done it.

its nice to not have something controlling your life...where are my cigs, i need to buy cigs, im almost out of cigs, can i bum a cig, where's my lighter, i dont have a lighter, what if i run out of cigs...etc etc.

Good luck man -
Chantix seems to work really well for most people, but like all med's it will only help with the physical desire to smoke - all of those associations you have with smking will continue to give you the urge to smoke - it usually takes some behavioral changes (substitutes/coping mechanisms etc) to be successful.

Good luck!

I have an ex g/f who considers herself to be a non-smoker (she is in some serious denial here) often goes through a pack one cigarette after another. Yikes, I'd hate to see her lungs.

Can mods help with some motivation? If he doesn't quit he's banned until he quits. Sound like a good plan? lol
