What to watch for:

The "limit" Outpost lists is how many they will let you BUY; most rebate forms have a limit of 1 per household, so double-check before you get all excited that you can get 2 or 5.

Other good deals:

Norton Partition Magic 8.0 for $10 after $20 (upgrade/cross-grade) and $30 rebates (site says $0.00 after rebates, but the rebate amounts are $50)

PC Cillin Internet Security for free after $25 and $15 (upgrade/cross-grade) rebates

I got the WD SATA 120g drive when it was on sale early in Jan. Same deal -- two rebates. So far, no notification, and there is no website to check status, only an 800#. It's a great drive, tho, very quiet.

Read the bottom of the rebate forms. Each says limit one per household on 843-104, 843-105 and 843-106 offers. I picked one up in store today and it has the same wording as the one online. outpost is letting you buy 2 of each drive, but don't expect to get 2 rebates. This is the first time i've seen this... the rebate forms before said limit 2.

I wouldn't trust offer 843-104 if you're ordering both the 120GB SATA and 80GB IDE.

Keep in mind that you can upgrade your standard WD warranty to 3 years for $14.95.

I agree that a longer warranty is reassuring...however, like most "electronics", if they're going to crap out it's usually within 60-90 days of utilization.

I've purchased 9 hard drives over the past 3 years and had 1 bad drive (it was DOA out-of-the-box), the remaining drives (1 Fujitsu, 2 WD and 5 Maxtor) are running very well.

I've read a lot of posts on hard drives lately (because I was in the market for one) and it seems most people have experiences similar to mine.

I've no proof of this...but I'm pretty sure the HD makers don't make different quality drives (i.e., drives which will crap out after 1 year and different build drives which will crap out after 3 years) to go with the different length warranties.

I would love to upgrade my current raid of 80's to a set of the 120 SATA drives. I may see if I can get somebody to buy one for me.

Are the WD 120 SATA drives quiet? I haven't bought a WD in years. I switched when maxtor came out with the fluid drive. Never went back because you could find a maxtor on sale at a lot more places than WD. Around here at least.

I can't hear the one I bought in Jan. It's in a Lanboy case with an air-cooled A643500+, which has a cheap HSF on it (temp solution till I get watercooling). No perceptible noise from the HDD. I'd get another, if I were going to do RAID.

I'm pretty sure that WDC has moved to fluid bearings now, too. Their all black drives are supposedly the newer ones.

This is the IDE version, not SATA (that was last week). Still a good deal, though.

The rebate on the Seagate is nice. Seagate said they received my rebate only 2 weeks after I sent it out, not bad so far. If I get it within a month, this will be amazing and I will just love Seagate forever, haha.
